Chapter 491
โOkay,โ I slid into a chair, looking at everyone. โLynn, Toya, and I will leave today to return to my fatherโs pack. You will all stay here with Mom and Wendy to remain safe. Iโll bring back food if you need anything, but donโt expect us to be gone long.โ
There were a few questioning looks. Shelly looked at my mother. โWhy canโt we just come with you? I hope you arenโt offended, but I just want to stay with Amy.โ She smiled, though it looked more like a grimace.
My mother laughed. โNot at all. I understand why you want to stay with her.โ
I leaned in. โHonestly, if I had the choice, everyone would come with me. But Rickโs dealing with someone who uses magic. They canโt trace you here because of the shield I erected.โ I held up a hand. โAnd before you ask, I canโt create another one strong enough to hide everyone in the pack.โ
Alannah tilted her head. โHow did you make this one?โ
I looked down at my hands. โCarlyโs father,โ I looked up, meeting her gaze. โHe was the last shaman; he knew what was coming. He ensured his death wouldnโt be wasted.โ I looked away. โHis death, blood, and sacrifice fuel the shield. Itโs not something I could recreate, even if I wanted to. His love is keeping this place safe.โ
Everyone nodded, but Rick looked disappointed. โSo we wonโt be able to fight with you?โ
I shook my head. โBut thereโs something else you can do.โ
Rick perked up. โWhat? Iโll do anything!โ
I held up a finger and ran upstairs. I returned with my computer and slid it to him. โVinceโs mainframe is on here. We need names, connections, bank trailsโeverything.โ
Rick nodded. โI can have the information in a day.โ He smiled despite my serious expression. โBelieve me, I know where he hides his files; I helped create the security. The hardest part will be tracking everything down.โ
โGood.โ I turned to Alannah and Ternen. โIf you could just help where you can.โ Alannah and Ternen brightened. โYouโre probably more familiar with half the things around here, and I know Wendy and Mom would appreciate the assistance.โ
โYes,โ Ternen smiled. โIf you donโt mind, I love to cook. I could take over meals.โ
Wendy bounced. โOh my god, yes! I suck at it.โ
Two giggles echoed from upstairs. โShe does,โ Carlyโs voice drifted down.
Wendy laughed. โSee?โ
Ternen smiled. โI havenโt been able to cook since Vince moved me out of the kitchens. I miss it.โ
Alannah smiled. โI can help with chores.โ She rubbed her stomach. โIโm starting to feel really nesting.โ
My mother smiled and patted her hand. โYou have to rest. But Iโll be doing morning trainings, even for you two.โ She looked at Ternen and Alannah. โIโll give you a pregnancy-friendly workout, but no one in my pack will be helpless.โ I raised an eyebrow, and my mother smiled. โIf you two are okay with it, Iโll teach Abby the same training as Carly. Itโs good to start them early.โ Rick and Shelly both nodded.
โNow,โ I sat back, โsince thatโs settled, letโs talk about what happened last night and this morning.โ
Rick looked at his hands. โAmyโฆโ
I reached over and patted his hands. โI know the three of you know what happened with your wolves, but I want to tell everyone.โ Everyone nodded. โShelly, Ternen, and Alannah all had the same creature in their mindsโa leech, if you will. Iโm telling you this in case you ever encounter one.โ Toya and Wendy leaned closer. โIt lives in the recesses of their mind, where your wolf feels safest. It hides in the shadows and drops onto your wolf, feeding on it.โ
Wendy shivered. โWhat does it look like?โ
โAlmost like a black centipede.โ She gagged, making me smile. โThe only way I could kill it was by force-feeding it power. It eats away at you slowly; it canโt handle a large amount of power. Push it, and it explodes.โ
Wendy bit her lip. โWhat if Iโm not strong enough?โ
โYou are. It doesnโt take much; itโs not built to withstand much power. It sips at you and injects you with fear, making you feel trapped until youโre too weak to fight back.โ I tapped the table. โNow your wolves know what to watch out for.โ I turned to Rick. โYour monster was different.โ
He nodded. โBees.โ
โYeah,โ I rubbed my eye as phantom pain flared. โWhen they stung, it felt like [โฆ], but you got a boost of energy. There was a giant hive feeding off your energy while torturing your wolf. By the time I got thereโฆโ
โBut you killed them and saved me.โ Rick looked a little dazed.
โAnd almost died doing it,โ my mother interjected.
