Chapter 491

โ€œOkay,โ€ I slid into a chair, looking at everyone. โ€œLynn, Toya, and I will leave today to return to my fatherโ€™s pack. You will all stay here with Mom and Wendy to remain safe. Iโ€™ll bring back food if you need anything, but donโ€™t expect us to be gone long.โ€

There were a few questioning looks. Shelly looked at my mother. โ€œWhy canโ€™t we just come with you? I hope you arenโ€™t offended, but I just want to stay with Amy.โ€ She smiled, though it looked more like a grimace.

My mother laughed. โ€œNot at all. I understand why you want to stay with her.โ€

I leaned in. โ€œHonestly, if I had the choice, everyone would come with me. But Rickโ€™s dealing with someone who uses magic. They canโ€™t trace you here because of the shield I erected.โ€ I held up a hand. โ€œAnd before you ask, I canโ€™t create another one strong enough to hide everyone in the pack.โ€

Alannah tilted her head. โ€œHow did you make this one?โ€

I looked down at my hands. โ€œCarlyโ€™s father,โ€ I looked up, meeting her gaze. โ€œHe was the last shaman; he knew what was coming. He ensured his death wouldnโ€™t be wasted.โ€ I looked away. โ€œHis death, blood, and sacrifice fuel the shield. Itโ€™s not something I could recreate, even if I wanted to. His love is keeping this place safe.โ€

Everyone nodded, but Rick looked disappointed. โ€œSo we wonโ€™t be able to fight with you?โ€

I shook my head. โ€œBut thereโ€™s something else you can do.โ€

Rick perked up. โ€œWhat? Iโ€™ll do anything!โ€

I held up a finger and ran upstairs. I returned with my computer and slid it to him. โ€œVinceโ€™s mainframe is on here. We need names, connections, bank trailsโ€”everything.โ€

Rick nodded. โ€œI can have the information in a day.โ€ He smiled despite my serious expression. โ€œBelieve me, I know where he hides his files; I helped create the security. The hardest part will be tracking everything down.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ I turned to Alannah and Ternen. โ€œIf you could just help where you can.โ€ Alannah and Ternen brightened. โ€œYouโ€™re probably more familiar with half the things around here, and I know Wendy and Mom would appreciate the assistance.โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ Ternen smiled. โ€œIf you donโ€™t mind, I love to cook. I could take over meals.โ€

Wendy bounced. โ€œOh my god, yes! I suck at it.โ€

Two giggles echoed from upstairs. โ€œShe does,โ€ Carlyโ€™s voice drifted down.

Wendy laughed. โ€œSee?โ€

Ternen smiled. โ€œI havenโ€™t been able to cook since Vince moved me out of the kitchens. I miss it.โ€

Alannah smiled. โ€œI can help with chores.โ€ She rubbed her stomach. โ€œIโ€™m starting to feel really nesting.โ€

My mother smiled and patted her hand. โ€œYou have to rest. But Iโ€™ll be doing morning trainings, even for you two.โ€ She looked at Ternen and Alannah. โ€œIโ€™ll give you a pregnancy-friendly workout, but no one in my pack will be helpless.โ€ I raised an eyebrow, and my mother smiled. โ€œIf you two are okay with it, Iโ€™ll teach Abby the same training as Carly. Itโ€™s good to start them early.โ€ Rick and Shelly both nodded.

โ€œNow,โ€ I sat back, โ€œsince thatโ€™s settled, letโ€™s talk about what happened last night and this morning.โ€

Rick looked at his hands. โ€œAmyโ€ฆโ€

I reached over and patted his hands. โ€œI know the three of you know what happened with your wolves, but I want to tell everyone.โ€ Everyone nodded. โ€œShelly, Ternen, and Alannah all had the same creature in their mindsโ€”a leech, if you will. Iโ€™m telling you this in case you ever encounter one.โ€ Toya and Wendy leaned closer. โ€œIt lives in the recesses of their mind, where your wolf feels safest. It hides in the shadows and drops onto your wolf, feeding on it.โ€

Wendy shivered. โ€œWhat does it look like?โ€

โ€œAlmost like a black centipede.โ€ She gagged, making me smile. โ€œThe only way I could kill it was by force-feeding it power. It eats away at you slowly; it canโ€™t handle a large amount of power. Push it, and it explodes.โ€

Wendy bit her lip. โ€œWhat if Iโ€™m not strong enough?โ€

โ€œYou are. It doesnโ€™t take much; itโ€™s not built to withstand much power. It sips at you and injects you with fear, making you feel trapped until youโ€™re too weak to fight back.โ€ I tapped the table. โ€œNow your wolves know what to watch out for.โ€ I turned to Rick. โ€œYour monster was different.โ€

He nodded. โ€œBees.โ€

โ€œYeah,โ€ I rubbed my eye as phantom pain flared. โ€œWhen they stung, it felt like [โ€ฆ], but you got a boost of energy. There was a giant hive feeding off your energy while torturing your wolf. By the time I got thereโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut you killed them and saved me.โ€ Rick looked a little dazed.

โ€œAnd almost died doing it,โ€ my mother interjected.
