Chapter 497

I laughed. Because that was ridiculous. I would have remembered Garith was my grandfather. My dad talked about him enough. โ€œCome on,โ€ I said, handing him my phone, and he clicked the email. His eyes darted back and forth over the screen as he read.

My dad just shook his head and looked at me. โ€œAre you sure you heard the name Garith?โ€

I nodded. โ€œIโ€™m sure.โ€ I pulled my phone back out. โ€œRick found this.โ€

โ€œThis canโ€™t be real,โ€ my dad whispered. โ€œMy father was killed by the King.โ€

Thoth shook his head. โ€œNo, he wasnโ€™t.โ€ My fatherโ€™s head snapped up. โ€œWhat did you say?โ€

Thoth sighed. โ€œThe old king had convened the council by the time your father was acting out. He was sentenced to death, but it was the councilโ€™s duty to enforce it.โ€

I looked around the room. I saw many unfamiliar faces. โ€œNix, go to Loki and ask if I can use magic in front of everyone here.โ€ Nix left as my father continued staring at the phone.

โ€œThe council?โ€ Toyaโ€™s father turned to Thoth, who nodded. โ€œThey seem to be popping up more and more.โ€

Nix returned. Loki said yes; he had performed magic in front of everyone there.

I stood. โ€œGrandma, I need you. I have questions.โ€

Everyone else stopped talking and turned to me. โ€œWhat is she talking about?โ€ someone whispered.

But I spun around when I heard a soft, โ€œOh.โ€

โ€œGrandma,โ€ I said, facing her as she looked around the room.

โ€œWell then,โ€ she sighed, her eyes meeting mine. โ€œBy the look on your daโ€™s face, I can only assume you have a lot of questions for me.โ€

โ€œWho the fuck is that?โ€ one of the Alphas whispered, and I laughed. Because what else could I do?

I faced the seated men. โ€œAs you know, my father has magic, stemming from his parentage. As I assume you all know, his mother, my actual grandmother, was a daughter of the first family, the first line of wolves. What you probably didnโ€™t know is that the first wolf was the son of a witch. A powerful line that settled in the area years before anyone else. The three-faced goddess couldnโ€™t save her son, so the moon goddess did. But his fatherโ€ฆGarith, is the son of a witch who fell in love with a wolf.โ€ I turned to my grandmother. โ€œThis is his mother.โ€

โ€œThe witch?โ€

My grandmother smiled. โ€œYes, thatโ€™s me.โ€ She reached out to cup my face. โ€œHow are you, my love?โ€

โ€œConfused,โ€ I smiled, raising my hand to hers. I couldnโ€™t feel her, but I closed my eyes and pretended.

โ€œThatโ€™s okay. Being confused just means you donโ€™t have all the information.โ€ Her voice was soft, and I nodded.

โ€œExactly.โ€ I opened my eyes.

โ€œGarithโ€ฆโ€

I watched her eyes flash as she inhaled deeply. Then she turned to my dad. โ€œI wanted so much more for you, my boy.โ€ My dad swallowed, his words rising at the end like a question: โ€œHeโ€™s dead.โ€

My grandmother shook her head. โ€œNo. Heโ€™s not.โ€

My dad sagged. โ€œHow?โ€ His voice was a soft whisper.

My grandmother walked over and rested a hand on his shoulder. โ€œYou know how. He has magic, as much as you, even if he didnโ€™t want to accept it.โ€

There were a few murmurs. โ€œSo he used magic to escape,โ€ Thoth growled.

She nodded. โ€œAye. Heโ€™s been manipulating those who follow him like puppets. He was, and still is, a foolish boy.โ€ She turned to me. โ€œHe hates you. He hates your father, but heโ€™s focused most of his wrath on you.โ€

My dad shot up. โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause she is a female who is stronger and smarter than he is. He hates being overshadowed.โ€ She shook her head. โ€œI raised my child to be forgiving, sweet, and loving. But when his wolf emerged, he shifted. His mind became obsessed with the first family, the king, the lycans.โ€

Thoth snorted. โ€œSo this was all because he wasnโ€™t a Lycan?โ€

She shook her head. โ€œI donโ€™t know why he turned out this way. He was always accepted in this pack, always cared for. But his obsession turned dark, and I knew we couldnโ€™t tell him the truth.โ€

โ€œThe truth?โ€ Alpha Tim questioned.

My dad tilted his head. โ€œThatโ€™s why my mother commanded me to never tell him we were the first line.โ€

My grandmother nodded. โ€œHe never loved her. He just wanted the power of this pack. He was focused on finding the first, or some way to trace the power back to the goddess. He never suspected what he sought was right under his nose. Your maโ€™s father made sure of it.โ€

The goddess shook her head. โ€œYou saved yourself.โ€ She leaned down and kissed his forehead. Then she turned to the others. โ€œYou are all devoted to my path, or the path of my sisters and brothers.โ€ She looked at Toyaโ€™s father. โ€œYour daughter has done well and will be rewarded if she survives the final battle.โ€

He swallowed, instantly alert. โ€œIt?โ€

The goddess gave a sad smile. โ€œI cannot see the future. I just lay the path.โ€

Thoth shifted, and she turned to face him. โ€œHiding behind a mask cannot change anything.โ€ His head snapped up.

โ€œMe?โ€ His voice was confused.

She chuckled. โ€œWho else is wearing a mask but you?โ€

Thoth scratched his head. โ€œNo one.โ€

โ€œExactly,โ€ she said, leaning down. โ€œYou hide yourself to protect yourself, but youโ€™re only keeping yourself away from what could be. You are hiding away, and I am worried you will miss your chance. If you donโ€™t confess the truthโ€”all of itโ€”then you will miss the thing you want most in this world.โ€

Thoth swallowed. โ€œBut what if I mess up again?โ€

She shrugged. โ€œThen you mess up. But holding back wonโ€™t do you any good.โ€

She turned. โ€œStay on the path, or donโ€™t. It is up to you all.โ€ Then I was back. I staggered, and Thoth steadied me.

โ€œAre you okay?โ€ His question was soft.

โ€œYeah,โ€ I said, patting his hand. A spark jumped between our skin. I furrowed my brow, pulling away. I turned back to the others. โ€œSo Iโ€™m sure you have questions.โ€ My smile was forced.

The others stared. โ€œThat was the goddess,โ€ Alpha Chris said, pale.

I nodded. โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œCould that have been magic?โ€ Alpha Tim looked at the others, who shrugged.

I exhaled. โ€œMagic can do a lot. I can change my appearance, my voice. But one thing is forbidden.โ€

My father nodded. โ€œItโ€™s forbidden to imitate a celestial.โ€

I nodded. โ€œAnyone who pretends to be a goddess will lose their blessingsโ€”magic, shifting, anything gifted. Rank, power, auraโ€”all stripped instantly.โ€

Toyaโ€™s father shook his head. โ€œThereโ€™s no way that was faked.โ€ He looked at the others. โ€œIโ€™ve felt the moon goddess before. I know you have too.โ€ The others nodded. โ€œTell me that what you felt was not the goddess.โ€

Tim looked away. โ€œShe felt like the goddess, but I just wanted to offer an explanation.โ€

I nodded. โ€œThatโ€™s fair. But I want to ask a question.โ€ I tilted my head.

He met my gaze and nodded. โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œSince youโ€™ve been in this office, you and a few others seem almost against my father,โ€ I said, everyoneโ€™s attention snapping to me. โ€œHe saved your packs from death, provided homes, welcomed you into his confidence while giving you the dignity and reverence due an alpha. When there was another attack, he took you to our sacred meeting place, somewhere no one outside our pack has ever been. Yet you still question him. Why?โ€

The question hung in the air. Alpha Tim looked at the others. โ€œItโ€™s not like that?โ€ he finally said.

Thoth stood behind me, silently showing his support. โ€œIt is like that,โ€ he said, looking around the room. โ€œIโ€™ve met with you multiple times, and every time I see some pushback. When Gavin leaves, there are always murmurs. I bit my tongue because Gavin asked me to, but Amy is right. After everything heโ€™s done for you, for your packs, you still act like this. Why?โ€

Toyaโ€™s father stood and spun on the others. โ€œIโ€™ve kept quiet for peace, but the Macleans have been saviors for my pack. My wolves look up to their example.โ€ He turned to my father and bowed. โ€œI should have spoken sooner.โ€

โ€œYou have Broderick,โ€ my father said, his voice tired.

โ€œIโ€™ve spoken to you about it, yes, but I should have spoken to the others long ago.โ€ He spun to face the men. โ€œYou mumble about Gavin taking our power, our pack, but heโ€™s never tried. You mumble about being weak alphas, and youโ€™re correct. We are weak alphas, but thatโ€™s not Gavinโ€™s fault.โ€

I stepped to Toyaโ€™s father. โ€œNot weak.โ€ He looked at me with soft eyes. I shook my head. โ€œNever weak alphas. Youโ€™re just new. Your packs are small, but we will help you become stronger.โ€
