A few days later, I walked through the halls of the pack house, smirking behind my mask. This was as gaudy as I expected. White and cream? Who chooses those for mating colors? I snorted as Meg, Shannonโs best friend, ran from a room in tears.
โI fucking hate her!โ she screamed, fleeing.
โShe seems like a real peach,โ a dark whisper came from behind a curtain. I was near.
โYou arenโt supposed to be near me,โ I leaned against the wall by the window.
โI know, but how could I not be?โ His voice was soft. I heard the window open. โBut someone is coming. I love you.โ Then he was gone.
The lack of guards was laughable. โDo we really need to wear these stupid fucking masks?โ Verityโs nasally voice echoed from down the hall. I continued walking. She rounded the corner with a familiar man, already masked.
โWill you please stop whining for five damn seconds?โ The man rubbed his forehead. โWeโve only been here an hour, and youโve already given me a migraine.โ
โDaddy,โ she pouted.
I froze, watching his face, familiar build, and voice. I shook my head before realizing it. He stopped beside me; I held my breath. He turned. โExcuse me?โ
โYes?โ I kept my voice low.
โWhere is this mating ceremony supposed to take place? Weโre just wandering around here.โ He smiled and lifted his mask. Any doubt vanished.
Verity lifted her mask. โHello? Omega? We asked you a question.โ She growled, reaching for my mask, but I dodged her.
โIโm sorry, we arenโt supposed to talk to the ranked wolves, nor are we allowed to remove our masks.โ I bowed. โIt was a command.โ I stepped back. โThe main event will be in the clearing outside, with a meal in the main hall to follow. Right now, the men are getting ready in the Alphaโs office, and the women are down the hall to the right.โ
The man watched me. โDo I know you?โ
โI donโt think so, Alpha.โ I dipped my head again. โWhatโs your name?โ
I panicked for a second. โClara, Alpha.โ
โGarith.โ He smiled, making my stomach clench. โYou can call me Garith.โ
I gave him a tight-lipped smile. โDid you need anything else, Alphaโฆ Garith?โ
He chuckled. โNo. Continue with your tasks.โ I nodded and started down the hall.
โWhy are you so nice to the Omegaโs daddy? They donโt fucking matter,โ Verity whined as I slipped around the corner.
He growled low. โIโve told you time and again. Omegas are the backbone of our packs. They do all the hard tasks no one else wants to do, and they enjoy it. It calls to their lower nature. If you donโt treat them nicely, theyโll leave, and then you have to lower yourself to get the shit done.โ His voice lowered. โYou treat the trash like theyโre cherished, and theyโll follow you to their death.โ He chuckled softly. โEveryone needs cannon fodder.โ
Verityโs laugh followed. โUnderstood.โ Their voices faded, but I trembled, stuck around the corner. Verity was myโฆaunt? No fucking way. I must have misheard.
โWhat are you doing?โ A sharp voice called out. I turned to see Meg glaring from a chair halfway down the hall in a reading nook the Luna demanded.
โI was walking, and I rolled my ankle in these heels.โ I wiggled the ridiculous high heels Shannon picked out for the waitstaff.
Meg faltered, holding an ice pack to her own ankle. โYeah, they are ridiculous.โ She sighed, icing her ankle. โDo you know where the Luna is?โ
I shook my head. โNo. I saw her heading downstairs with another Omega. Did you need her?โ
Meg groaned, looking around before deciding. โNo one will believe an omega, anyway.โ I limped closer. โSheโs being such a bitch, and Iโm at my witโs end. She wants the Luna to walk with her down the aisle, but the Luna already said no.โ I tilted my head, shuffling closer. โDo you know what she did? She fucking threw a tantrum and pushed me, spraining my ankle. Knowing my wolf is too weak to heal it before the fucking walk down the aisle.โ She growled.
โWhat do you need me to do?โ
She leveled me with a look. โFind the Luna and convince her to walk Shannon down the fucking aisle.โ She pushed her power into her next words. โConvince the Luna or kill yourself. This fucking bitch.โ
