Chapter 604

Rowan nodded once. โ€œThe one who is supposed to find them is still a child.โ€ He turned to me. โ€œAre you sure about this?โ€

โ€œNot at all, but the Goddess chose her for a reason. We have to respect her decision.โ€ I clicked off everything on my fatherโ€™s computer, and the desk turned dark once again.

โ€œWhen did your father have time to design that desk?โ€ Rowan knocked on the top for a second before I started for the door.

โ€œI can only assume the man was bored out of his mind at the Agora.โ€ I headed out the door, and the two men followed behind. โ€ He probably took a few years to make it and moved it back here when they moved back.โ€ I looked back at Rowan. โ€œWhy? Do you want one?โ€

Rowan grinned. โ€œHeck, yeah, I do.โ€ I smiled as we headed down the stairs.

โ€œMe too,โ€ I laughed as we headed out to see the damage.

โ€œChecking on everything?โ€ Rowan offered as we reached the ground.

โ€œYeah. I want to check in with everyone. Have everyone started moving back to the pack house and their homes. Plusโ€ฆโ€ I trailed off as I walked up to Greyson. โ€œHow have they been?โ€

He turned to me and smiled. โ€œEverything has been quiet. Just like you said, as soon as they were caught, they shut down.โ€ The Elite guards were all standing around the guards that survived the attack.

I nodded once as we circled the guards on their knees. โ€œI figured.โ€

Rowan went to one of his team, and they whispered back and forth for a second before he pulled back and called out over the men on their knees. โ€œThe council has been disbanded. All except Silas have been or will be executed.โ€ His voice carried over the clearing. โ€œThose of you who followed Silas, please stand.โ€

My father, Silas, and Ronnie stepped out of the house and hurried over. โ€œMy King,โ€ Silas rushed over and dropped to his knees. โ€ I know that trust is understandably not given freely right now, but my menโ€ฆI trust them with my life.โ€ Silas bowed to the ground again. โ€œPlease spare them.โ€

I crouched and helped Silas to his feet. โ€œWe wouldnโ€™t act recklessly, Silas.โ€ I smiled as I pulled him over to where his group of guards now stood. I turned to the men gathered there. โ€œIt is an honor to have your leader speak so highly of your dedication.โ€

The men there all dropped to one knee. But it was the man closest to me who bowed his head and spoke up. โ€œIt is. Thank you, Alpha, for helping him.โ€ The man looked up, and something clicked in my head.

โ€œWho are you?โ€ I asked before I could think. His chocolate skin and dark eyes werenโ€™t familiar in the normal sense, but I knew instantly that he was important.

โ€œMy name is Sequan Derant.โ€ He bowed his head again.

โ€œYou are an Alpha. I can feel your aura. Why are you bowing to me?โ€ I crouched to be level with him.

โ€œWhen we enter the guard, we give up our official rank so we are not involved in secession battles. Our focus is fully on the people we are meant to protect.โ€

I looked up to Rowan. โ€œReally?โ€

He nodded. โ€œAll of our guards agree to this. Most are not in their packโ€™s line of inheritance, and it saves them from sometimes lethal situations.โ€

Silas held his hand out to Sequan. โ€œHis family was attacked twenty years ago. He was the only survivor of his pack.โ€ Silas turned to me after helping his guard up. โ€œHe chose to become my guard instead of trying to start a new pack. He wanted to learn. Rowan allowed him to make that choice.โ€

I nodded once. โ€œGood.โ€ I turned back to the guards still on their knees. โ€œWhat exactly should we do with the others?โ€

Rowan sighed as he rubbed his face. โ€œI have no idea.โ€ He looked over the men and shook his head. โ€œI donโ€™t want to execute everyone, but with everything going onโ€ฆwe have no way of actually knowing who is a traitor or not.โ€

โ€œCommand them,โ€ my father said, looking at us confused.

โ€œWhat?โ€ I turned to him.

My dad looked at us as if we had grown three heads. โ€œYou are the King and Queenโ€ฆcommand them to tell the truth.โ€

Silas shook his head. โ€œIt wonโ€™t work. Our guards take an oath, and unless they are released from it, they canโ€™t move against the one who swore them into it, even if the oath holder is dead.โ€

I turned to my father. โ€œWhat about a truth spell?โ€ I flipped through the book in my mind.

โ€œIt wonโ€™t work,โ€ Silas shook his head. โ€œThe oath itself was created by the Goddess to hold against magic, and wolf command alike.โ€

I threw my hands up. โ€œWell, unless the Goddess herself wants to fucking help figure out who is a traitor and who isnโ€™t, what are we supposed to do? Kill everyone?โ€

Silas looked down, and I felt bad for snapping. But it was the soft tsking from behind me that had me turning. โ€œYou would think that your father would have taught you not to talk about the Goddess like that.โ€

I smiled as I walked over to my grandmother. โ€œWell, I was frustrated. I think she would understand.โ€

My grandmother smiled. โ€œOf course, she does. Thatโ€™s why she sent me. To help.โ€ She turned and walked to my father. โ€œIโ€™m happy to see you alive and well, my boy.โ€ She kissed the air near his cheek and then turned back to the guards. โ€œYour oaths protect you, but the Goddess does not protect the ones that turned their backs on her. Ich nin to shoha ali thi.โ€ She waved her hand, and stars bloomed on some of their brows.

โ€œNew spell?โ€ I raised an eyebrow. She nodded.

โ€œRemember, itโ€ฆit will always show you who you can trust. It shows who follows the Goddessโ€™s path.โ€ I walked over to kiss her, but I heard a gasp from the tree line.

โ€œMate.โ€
