Chapter Ninety-Nine

The silence settled around us as Carl mourned over his daughter. โ€œBut we arenโ€™t for sureโ€ฆโ€ I waited, hoping someone would say something, anything. But my mom and Carl stayed quiet.

โ€œAmy,โ€ my mom started.

โ€œCan we delay her learning somehow?โ€ I tried to think of any other solution that didnโ€™t leave a little girl without her father.

โ€œNo.โ€ Carlโ€™s voice was soft. โ€œIf I even try, then the universe kicks in and we have a shaman that doesnโ€™t know their full potential.โ€ He finally looked up from his daughter. โ€œAinsleyโ€ฆ I hate to ask this of you.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to ask.โ€ She leaned down and kissed his cheek.

โ€œI need to know how longโ€ฆโ€ I pushed.

โ€œWhy?โ€ Carl looked at me.

โ€œBecause.โ€ I walked away and came back. My skin was itching to tell them to leave now. Something was screaming at me to tell them to pack up their shit and hide.

โ€œWhat do you feel?โ€ Carlโ€™s voice was deep, thoughtful, and terrifying.

โ€œWhat?โ€ My mom looked at Carl, but he wouldnโ€™t move his eyes from me.

โ€œYou need to hide. You need to leave. Nothing good comes from you being here. It just leaves her in danger.โ€ My voice was deeper. I felt the world shift, and my eyes did too. Only this time, it wasnโ€™t the eyes of my wolf. I went from seeing the world around me to nothing.

โ€œWhatโ€™s happening?โ€ My mother gasped. โ€œHow is this even possible?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know.โ€ Carlโ€™s voice was a whisper.

โ€œDarkness surrounds this pack. If the three-spirited one takes too long to figure it out, or the shaman falls into the hands of the tainted alphas, the world as we know it will be lost. Darkness and evil will seep into the world and corrupt everything bright.โ€ I felt my body turn and looked down at the little wolf. โ€œYou need to hide her.โ€

I heard an intake of breath, and my motherโ€™s hands came up to cup my face. โ€œThe three-spirited one?โ€ I felt her lean in. โ€œWho is the three-spirited one?โ€

I felt my head tilt. โ€œYou know who the three-spirited one is, Luna. You need to find out the truth of your past before you ruin your future.โ€ She shuddered but pulled me into her arms.

โ€œCarl?โ€ My motherโ€™s voice trembled, and I wanted to reassure her, but I wasnโ€™t myself.

โ€œI know itโ€™s terrifying, but just like me, she will come out of it.โ€

โ€œWhat is it? She has done nothing like this before.โ€

โ€œWhat changed lately?โ€

โ€œNothing,โ€ my mother started, but then stopped. โ€œThe beginning of the summer, she woke up and was just different.โ€ I heard her shift. โ€œShe said she needed to hide her scent, and I called my ex. I knew that his family had power. It wasnโ€™t really hidden in the pack. And he could help her. She came back with an unfamiliar scent, but thatโ€™s it.โ€

โ€œWolves canโ€™t change their scent, not alone, and not for long.โ€ Carlโ€™s voice was strong but quiet. โ€œThe only way for Amy to have changed her scent would be if the goddess herself granted her the power of her father.โ€

โ€œWhat does that even mean?โ€

โ€œThere are some wolves that come from a family that have human ancestors, ones that have powers.โ€

โ€œYeah, Gavinโ€™s grandmother had power. Well, he said she did.โ€

โ€œAny descendants of hers will have to go through an awakening, just like a shaman. If their powers are awakened and they are able to balance them with their wolves, then they can shift and use their goddess-given power.โ€

โ€œThree-spiritedโ€ฆโ€ I heard her intake of breath. โ€œGoddess-given.โ€

Carl was quiet for a minute. โ€œHave you told her?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYou have to. She needs to know.โ€ Carl shifted.

โ€œThe three-spirited one already knows. She has been watching.โ€ My voice was thick and foreign.

โ€œCarl?โ€

โ€œShe is right. She has three souls: her wolf, her human witch, andโ€ฆโ€

โ€œStop.โ€ My motherโ€™s voice was sharp. โ€œNot here.โ€

โ€œFine, but you will have to tell her soon. She obviously has things she has to do, and if you keep her in the dark too long, you might jeopardize everything.โ€

The two of them were quiet for a minute. โ€œWhat are you going to do?โ€ My mother questioned.

โ€œIโ€™m going to listen to your daughter. Iโ€™m going to pack up and take Carly with me.โ€

โ€œWhere will you go?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know. We have nowhere safe.โ€

The voice came from me. โ€œSilvermoon will be a safe haven for you and your child. There is a pathway under the gazebo. Take it to the sea. You will find a burnt husk of a cabin there. Rebuild. She will be safe there from all who wish to find her.โ€
