Chapter 100
โDaddy?โ Her soft voice was terrified. โWhat happened?โ
โHey baby.โ Carlโs voice softened. โHow are you feeling?โ
โAre you going to leave me now?โ Her voice quivered, and I heard Carl choke up.
โNot yet, baby. But soon.โ
My eyes finally started to clear. โHe will never truly leave you, young shaman. That I can promise. Our ancestors live on through us. And he will watch over you.โ The voice was softer, and when my vision fully cleared, I held her face in my hands.
โAmyโฆyou promise?โ
โI promise.โ I kissed her head and she sighed.
โI saw whatโs to come.โ Her voice was stronger. โI know my daddy will go, but you will be there with me. Every step of the way.โ
โOf course, I will.โ I didnโt even think about it. I promised to take this baby in.
โAmy!โ My mom cut in. But Carly looked up at her.
โI know my daddy asked you, but you have your own path, and she and I have our own.โ Her voice was so much older than it should have been.
I looked at my mom. โSheโs right. I donโt know how we know, just that she is.โ I looked at Carl. โYou feel it as well.โ He just nodded. I turned back to my mother. โIt seems we have a lot to talk about.โ
I watched her swallow and then nod. โYes, I think we do.โ She turned to Carl. โWe have to go. We have spent too much time here as it is. But I will come back tomorrow.โ
Carl shook his head. โDonโt bother, Iโll be leaving tonight.โ He hugged Carly closer. โCan you call Gavin for me?โ
My mother shivered, but I pulled out my phone. I dialed my fatherโs number. โAmy? Is everything okay?โ His voice came over the line and I felt a part of my soul settle. Every time I leave him and the pack, I leave a part of myself back there.
โYeah daddy. Everything is okay. I have a favor to ask you.โ
โWhatever it is, itโs yes.โ He chuckled. โYou know I could never say no to you.โ
โPlease. Just listen.โ He heard the seriousness in my voice, and his chuckle trailed off.
โOkay baby. What can I help with?โ
โHave you ever had a feeling?โ I stumbled over my words. I didnโt know how to explain it.
โI need more of an explanation, Amy.โ
โHave you ever met a shamanโฆโ
โYour mother introduced you to Carl?โ His voice was surprised. โHow is the old bastard?โ
Carl chuckled. โIโm good, Gavin.โ I hit the speakerphone and my fatherโs surprise filtered through. I saw my mom sag against the shelf at his voice.
โCarl, itโs good to hear your voice.โ They went through the idle chitchat that people do, and then my father steered the call back to the matter at hand. โThis isnโt why you called, is it?โ
โNo.โ Carlโs voice was frank. โI need your help.โ
โYou need my help? And you convinced Amy to help you?โ He sounded a little taken aback.
โNo daddy. I hadโฆโ I looked at Carl. โI donโt know what happened.โ
โShe had a vision of sorts.โ Carl tried to help.
โA vision?โ
โIs that normal with your line?โ Carl hedged his bet.
โNot with me, but my grandmother did.โ My father became quiet. โWhat did you see?โ
โDestruction. Death. The end of our kind,โ Carly and I said together.
โWhat is going on, Amy?โ
โCarlyโs come into her power.โ I watched as Carl tried to push down his feelings.
โWhose Carly?โ My dad asked.
โCarlโs four-year-old daughter.โ I looked down at the girl, but she shook her head.
โIโm four and a half.โ Her little voice made me smile.
โOh Carl. I am so sorry.โ My dad comforted him, but he was already shaking his head.
โNothing you should apologize for.โ
โWhat can I do?โ
โGrandmaโs cabinโฆThey need to go there.โ
โItโs a burnt husk baby, you saw that for yourself.โ
โCarl will rebuild it with Carly. When the cabin is doneโฆโ I trailed off, I looked up and met his eyes. He gave a small nod. Carl knew and understood that as soon as the cabin was rebuilt, his time was up.
โWe canโt stay here.โ Carl put out.
โYou are more than welcome back.โ My dad was quiet for a moment. โDoes your mother know? I donโt want her to be surprised by this. I donโt want to hurt her.โ I watched as a tear slipped down her face and she turned away.
โYeah daddy, she knows.โ I looked back at Carly. โIf Carly falls into the wrong hands, then everything we are trying to protect will fall.โ
โI understand.โ He was quiet. โThis is becoming a bigger mess than expected, faster than I expected.โ
