Gwenda patted Wendy’s shoulder reassuringly before recounting what had happened to Olivier.
“That’s basically what happened,” she said. “But I think Gretchen probably started this herself.” After all, Gretchen had framed many people in a previous life. However, Gwenda didn’t understand why Gretchen would frame Wendy Petit, who had no reason to antagonize her.
“Either way,” Gwenda said, “let’s go to the hospital.”
Olivier took Wendy to the hospital, and Gwenda accompanied them. Not far away, Martin saw them and managed to get into the ambulance with Gretchen. Gretchen was taken to the emergency room while Martin waited on a bench outside. When Olivier and the others arrived, they encountered him.
Upon seeing Gwenda, Martin stood up and accused her. “Did you push Gretchen?”
Gwenda froze, then smiled mockingly. “Is that what she told you?”
“Gwenda, Gretchen is your sister! How could you hurt her like this?” Martin feigned heartbreak.
Gwenda found this amusing. Wendy tried to interject, but Gwenda stopped her, saying in a low voice, “Don’t bother with someone as dense as him.”
“But…” Wendy began.
“Don’t worry, I’ll handle it,” Gwenda said, giving Wendy a reassuring look before turning back to Martin. “I don’t want to waste my time with you. We’ll talk after Gretchen is released.” She then led Wendy to the bench, where Olivier quietly joined them.
Martin frowned, furious at Gwenda’s indifference. Time passed. Gretchen remained in the emergency room, and the four waited silently. As the night wore on, the corridor grew quieter. A gust of cold wind made Gwenda shiver.
“Cold?” Olivier asked softly, but Martin overheard. He glanced at Gwenda, noticing her thin clothing and shivering. Without hesitation, he was about to offer his jacket when Olivier put an arm around her.
“I didn’t bring a jacket,” Olivier said, his voice deep and attractive. “Is this better?”
Sharing body heat so closely, Gwenda blushed and murmured, “It’s okay, I’m fine.”
“Relax, don’t move,” Olivier said, tightening his embrace. “You just recovered from a cold. Do you want to be hospitalized again?” Gwenda hesitated, then ceased resisting, accepting his embrace.
Martin witnessed this exchange, envious rage filling him as his eyes darkened. Gwenda had never been so affectionate with him. He hadn’t expected such a change with a new man! This made him deeply unhappy, his handsome features darkening with displeasure.
At that moment, the emergency room door opened, and a doctor emerged. …
Martin was still composing himself when Gwenda approached the doctor. “How is she?” she asked.
The doctor removed his mask. “She’s fine,” he said lightly. “A nasty fall, but no injuries. One night of observation will suffice.”
Gretchen was then wheeled out by a nurse. Martin finally regained his composure and approached her. “Gretchen, are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” Gretchen replied, shaking her head weakly.
Gwenda then led Wendy forward. “Since everyone’s here, Gretchen, perhaps you could tell us exactly what happened?”
