"Miss Evans, I'm so sorry. We didn't know who you were. We apologize for offending you earlier."
It was embarrassing to be gossiping about someone only to be overheard by them.
"What happened?"
Gretchen approached the staff member, smiling. "Are you bullying my sister?"
"No, no, Miss Evans. It was a misunderstanding."
Gretchen adopted a protective stance. "My sister is good-tempered, but she's not someone to be bullied. I won't tolerate such treatment."
The staff member nervously wiped their brow. "Yes, yes. You're right, Miss Evans. We won't do it again."
Gretchen nodded. "Good."
"Was there something you wanted, Gretchen?"
Gwenda's displeased voice cut through the air. She regarded her stepsister coldly.
Gretchen's face instantly fell. "Sis, why are you so fierce?"
"Are we close?" Gwenda asked, a mocking smile playing on her lips. "Don't pretend we're close. And this display of support? Are you trying to prove you're better than your 'loser' sister?"
"I wasn't trying to do anything," Gretchen mumbled, her head bowed, eyes welling up. "I just wanted to help you."
"Oh, help me? How kind," Gwenda said sarcastically.
"Why won't you forgive me, sis?" Gretchen's voice choked with what seemed to be distress.
The staff member felt increasingly awkward. What the hell was going on? they wondered. Why was she crying?
Gwenda remained unfazed, accustomed to Gretchen's theatrics. However, Hattie, beside her, intervened. "Come on, Miss Evans! You're terribly odd. This is none of your business. Gwenda barely spoke to you, and you're crying like she bullied you. What are you trying to do?"
"I wasn't trying to do anything, I just wanted to reconcile with my sister" Gretchen's cries intensified.
Gwenda watched her stepsister's performance, her anger simmering.
Martin arrived, having heard the commotion. Seeing Gretchen's tears, he flared up. Glaring at Gwenda, he demanded, "What did you do to Gretchen again?"
Gwenda stared coldly back, her temples throbbing.
"Gwenda, if you're unhappy, come at me. Why embarrass Gretchen in public?" Martin pulled Gretchen behind him, glaring menacingly at Gwenda.
The scene attracted a crowd of backstage staff.
"What's going on?" "A cat fight. Looks like it's over a guy." "Wow, who's winning?" "Looks like the younger sister."
Gwenda remained silent.
Gretchen spoke up. "Martin, it's nothing to do with her. It was my fault. I meddled in my sister's affairs, and she didn't like it."
"You stood up for her, and she still tried to teach you a lesson?" Martin frowned, his expression darkening.
"It's not her fault. It's mine. It's natural she doesn't want to forgive me" Gretchen sobbed quietly.
Martin, feeling sorry for her, offered comfort before turning back to Gwenda with coldness. "You've disappointed me, Gwenda."
Gwenda felt disgust. She couldn't be bothered with them.
Hattie exploded. "Hey, you're a real jerk! What do you mean Gwenda disappointed you? What right does a cheating scumbag like you have to yell? And you, Gretchen Evans, how sick are you? Stop pretending! You stole her fiancé! Is it wrong if she doesn't want to talk to you now?"
