Chapter 80: Confirmed: It's Him

Yun Bing hadn't left the house all day. She hadn't even gone out for vegetables. Her sole focus was on Ye Mo's awakening. She repeatedly reheated his congee, but he remained unconscious. His breathing, though shallow, was present; otherwise, she feared the worst. She'd never witnessed such prolonged unconsciousness. Even confined indoors, she knew something significant was happening outside. She saw police cars patrolling the streets frequently.
She couldn't fathom who Ye Mo had killed or why it caused such a commotion.
At Ning Qingxue's house, everyone except Su Jingwen and her parents had left. Ning Qingxue ate a light meal, gazing at the Silver Heart Grass when Li Mumei rushed in.
"Qingxue, you're awake!?" Li Mumei exclaimed joyfully.
"Yes, I feel much better, Mumei. What happened?" Ning Qingxue asked, noticing Li Mumei's haste.
Li Mumei, remembering her news, said, "Qingxue, I heard Song Shaotan was killed in Ning Hai last night. The killer also murdered five others; one seemed more influential than Song Shaotan, but I don't know who."
Ning Qingxue pondered, "Mumei, do you know who the others were?"
Li Mumei shook her head. "No, I haven't heard anything about the others. I only heard it from a friend. It's a big story; many journalists have arrived in Ning Hai. I know several from Beijing, so I might have more information tomorrow."
Why had Song Shaotan come to Ning Hai? Had he ordered her injury? And who had killed him? Ning Qingxue suddenly thought of Ye Mo and asked, "Mumei, did you get the blood analysis results?"
"Yes" Li Mumei handed her the report. Ning Qingxue's eyes widened in excitement.
"What is it, Qingxue?" Li Mumei asked anxiously.
Ning Qingxue shook her head. "Nothing I'm going inside for a bit. I'll be out later." She retreated to her room.
Li Mumei, assuming Ning Qingxue was tired from her recovery, didn't press further.
However, Ning Qingxue was elated. The blood type matched Ye Mo's: both were B positive. While insufficient for definitive identification, she firmly believed it was him.
She felt Ye Mo had returned. Was he connected to the murders last night? If not Ye Mo, who would dare target the Song family? Ye Mo had killed Song Shaowen; Song Shaotan was a logical next target, and he had the motive.
Knowing Ye Mo might have returned to save her, she felt immense relief. She'd already accepted him as her husband; seeing her in that state wouldn't change things.
Yet, a new worry surfaced. If Ye Mo had killed Song Shaotan in Ning Hai, he'd be in grave danger. What if he hadn't escaped? She wished, for his safety, that it wasn't him. The Song family's power made escape unlikely.
"Qingxue, you're alright?" Xu Wei asked in astonishment. Aware of Ning Qingxue's critical injuries and the hospital's grim prognosis, she was stunned by her apparent recovery.
"Yes, I've recovered. Perhaps the hospital misdiagnosed; my injuries weren't that serious," Ning Qingxue replied, nodding.
Xu Wei remained skeptical. Ning Qingxue had been treated at Ning Hai's best hospital, nationally renowned. How could they make such a mistake? Moreover, she'd witnessed the attack.
Seeing Xu Wei's disbelief, Ning Qingxue changed the subject. "Why aren't you at work again today?"
"Sigh, why are your tones exactly the same, yesterday, Ye…" Xu Wei stopped abruptly, remembering Ye Mo's request for secrecy.
Though Xu Wei stopped herself, Ning Qingxue sensed something. "What happened yesterday? Did Ye Mo return!?" She instinctively grasped Xu Wei's hands.
Xu Wei, seeing her betrayed secret, sighed. "Yesterday, Ye Mo returned and looked at the flower pots for hours. He asked about you and left, probably to see you at the hospital. Didn't you see him?"
Ning Qingxue released Xu Wei's hands, whispering, "It was him. He's alright! He came back; he must have…"
"Qingxue, rest. You've just recovered. Xu Wei, we'll eat together later; my mom and I are cooking," Li Mumei said, approaching Ning Qingxue, who stood in the doorway.
"Qingxue, why are you so red? Are you hot?" Li Mumei asked, noticing Ning Qingxue's flushed face.
Ning Qingxue thought about Ye Mo's visit, wondering if he'd heard her call him "Lao Gong" (Husband). The embarrassment was overwhelming. However, she was now certain it was him. A wave of warmth and sweetness washed over her.
Li Mumei's question reminded her: if Ye Mo had been there, he must have killed Song Shaotan for revenge. The thought of his potential flight and precarious situation returned her to worry.
"Qingxue…" Li Mumei noticed the rapid change in Ning Qingxue's expression.
Ning Qingxue shook her head. "I'm fine, Mumei. You said you know journalists in Beijing. Can you arrange a meeting tonight?"
Ning Qingxue hoped to glean information about Ye Mo's situation through the journalist's report of last night's events.
"Qingxue, you want to see a journalist? Don't you hate them?" Li Mumei asked, but seeing Ning Qingxue's determined expression, continued, "Okay, I'll ask tonight. I should be able to find one or two."
