Yu Miaodan’s phone rang. She answered, but the line was silent.

Before she could react, Wu Xueming’s face paled. “Quick! Turn it off!” he urged.

Yu Miaodan hung up, confused. “What’s wrong, Xueming?” she asked.

“They’ve probably geolocated us,” Wu Xueming said grimly. “They’ll find us in under two minutes.”

Yu Miaodan’s face went white. “But… I just got a new number! How did they know?” Ye Mo saw her fear and realized they’d crossed someone powerful.

“You called Dai Shan before getting the new number,” Wu Xueming explained, regaining his composure. “It was likely through her.”

Yu Miaodan was incredulous. “Dai Shan is like a sister to me! Why would she do that?”

“Nothing’s impossible,” Wu Xueming said calmly. “Even the closest relationships crumble under pressure. We need to focus on what to do next.” Ye Mo admired Wu Xueming’s quick thinking.

“Brother Ye, I’m so sorry,” Wu Xueming said apologetically, glancing at Yu Miaodan. “We’re running, but the people I offended are far more dangerous than those you’ve crossed. Staying here puts you in danger.”

Yu Miaodan, having calmed down, chuckled. “Xueming, what’s to worry about? Can they stop us from dying together?”

Wu Xueming didn’t share her bravado. “I’m a man,” he said glumly, stopping the car, “and I can’t even protect my woman.” He clearly wanted Ye Mo to leave.

Ye Mo considered his options. He’d already faced enough trouble, but he couldn't abandon those who'd helped him.

Seeing Ye Mo hesitate, Wu Xueming pressed, “Brother Ye, get out! The people I offended are incredibly powerful. They might stop us.”

Ye Mo smiled. “Brother Wu, I want to help. You helped me, and I can't just leave. An extra person means more strength. I hope you don’t mind.”

Wu Xueming sighed. “I understand why you offended those local authorities. Your personality… But I admire your character. It's a pity we can't share a drink. These people are far beyond those local officials. Just go!”

Ye Mo relented. “Which city is next?”

“Jiemu Town, a small town about twenty minutes away by car, longer on foot,” Wu Xueming replied, assuming Ye Mo planned to walk.

“Drop me there. I’ll find another ride,” Ye Mo said.

“Twenty minutes is enough for them to find us,” Wu Xueming said, taking a small road. He drove fast, despite the narrow path.

Twenty minutes later, they saw the lights of Jiemu Town. Then, they heard a whirring sound—a helicopter. Wu Xueming stopped, his face grim.

Ye Mo nodded. The enemy's power was overwhelming.

Wu Xueming apologized. “Brother Ye, you’re caught in this now. They won’t let you go.” He took Yu Miaodan’s hand, his worry evident.

Yu Miaodan remained resolute. “Xueming, it’s okay. As long as we’re together. They can stop us from living, but can they stop us from dying together?”

Wu Xueming drew a pistol and offered Ye Mo a knife. “Use this! Even in death, I’ll take two with me!”

Ye Mo declined. “I have my own means of protection.”

Wu Xueming’s perception of Ye Mo shifted. Ye Mo’s calm demeanor indicated he wasn't ordinary.

“Brother Ye,” Wu Xueming said, “have you heard of Metal River?”

Ye Mo shook his head.

Wu Xueming explained, “They're the only gang in mainland China not controlled by Nan Qing. They’re incredibly powerful. I offended Huang, one of the top three in Metal River. He's the reason for the helicopter. Aside from the leader and his rarely seen second-in-command, Huang is the most powerful.”

Ye Mo understood. Offending Huang meant facing a formidable enemy. Their chances of survival were slim.
