After hearing her response, I placed my hands on the desk.
“Don’t call him. Call Alpha Lucas and tell him that Nat—”
“Hello,” she interrupted. It seemed the person had already received the call.
I sighed, removing my hands from the desk.
“Beta Patric, is Alpha on your side?” I asked, my gaze fixed on the woman. Hadn't she said she would call Adrian? Why Patric? Or was she pretending to have reached Alpha?
The reception area was calm, allowing me to overhear her conversation.
“No, he’s in a meeting,” Patric replied.
The woman said politely, “Sir, we need to ask him something.”
“He won’t be free for an hour. What’s the matter?” Patric asked.
“Sir, someone came to see Alpha’s father,” the woman said, eyeing me.
She noticed my attention and moved away, whispering conspiratorially.
I rolled my eyes. I had no interest; I only wanted to leave this pack after seeing Alpha Lucas.
“Who is your father?” I heard the woman ask.
“Excuse me?” I frowned. I wouldn't reveal my father's name; I wasn't here to disclose my identity.
“Beta Patric is asking. You can’t visit without providing details.”
“Tell him Natalia came to see Alpha Lucas,” I said loudly enough for him to hear.
The woman’s expression shifted. She then handed me the phone. “He wants to talk to you.”
After placing the bouquets on the desk, I took the phone.
Beta Patric’s voice filled my ear.
“Natalia, is that really you?”
“Yes, it’s me. I was summoned by your Alpha, and now I’m expected to answer a thousand questions just to meet his father? Is that—”
My tone was formal, not icy. He was Adrian’s beta and close friend; I couldn't be overly familiar.
“I apologize for the inconvenience. I’m telling her to take you directly to Alpha Lucas’s cabin.”
I returned the phone. She spoke to Beta Patric, glancing at me.
After Beta Patric hung up, the woman gestured to the left. "This way, Madam."
I picked up a bouquet. Before I could grab the second, she said, “Let me help you carry it.”
We entered an elevator. She pressed the top button, a VIP floor.
“I apologize, Madam. I didn’t realize you were Alpha’s guest. Many young women visit his father—”
I listened calmly. “Their sole purpose is to meet Alpha Adrian,” she continued.
I snorted. “Your Alpha and his fangirls.”
She blushed, confirming her place among them. I said nothing more; his fans were irrelevant.
The elevator doors opened. Outside, security guards in black suits stood before a door. I stopped.
“They’re Alpha’s bodyguards, protecting his father,” the woman explained.
I ignored the guards and approached the door. After questioning me, they nodded to the woman and let me enter.
Since she couldn't enter the cabin, she gave a bouquet to a guard and left. A guard opened the door for me, and I entered the luxurious cabin.
The scent of various pharmaceutical concoctions filled my nostrils.
A man lay in a hospital bed; his wife sat beside him, reading a newspaper. She turned, surprised to see me.
“Luna.”
I approached her. She rose from her stool. I smiled and placed the bouquet on the small table. She hugged me.
“How are you, Natalia?”
Her kindness left me speechless.
“I’m fine, Luna.”
She smiled. “I’m not Luna anymore,” she reminded me.
I was silent. I couldn't call her “Mom” anymore. She was no longer my mother-in-law.
I turned to Alpha Lucas.
“How is he?” I mumbled to Adrian’s mother, Grace Miller.
“He’s very sick. His wolf isn’t responding. Doctors say it will take time for him to recover.” Sorrow filled her voice.
He opened his eyes as if jolted awake. His eyes widened when he saw me.
“Natalia?”
He lifted his hand; I took it.
“Alpha.”
“You came to see me?!”
“Yes.”
“Who told you about me?”
His question stunned me. Hadn't he told his son to call me?
Before I could answer, the door opened. Auntie Grace exclaimed in surprise, “Adrian? What are you doing here?”
