Chapter 1000: Saved By The Bell
After a long pause, they began eating. As Colby watched the two seated beside him, a strange glint appeared in his eyes.
โI was thinking we might need Mr. Damarisโ help in catching the person who orchestrated the fire,โ he said suddenly, surprising everyone. Jack stopped eating, raising an eyebrow. โWhat do you mean?โ
Colby explained, โThe bribed staff member experienced family difficulties. While this was only known within the research institute, the culprit learned of it and exploited his vulnerability. Clearly, this person has thoroughly investigated everyone at the institute.โ
His voice grew serious. โHe must have done his research before targeting that specific employee.โ
This was the first time Roxanne had heard this theory, and it startled her. The fire occurred the day after the medicinal herbs were delivered. If the culprit had investigated all the staffโฆ How could he identify Jason so quickly? She fell into a daze, remembering her own earlier suspicions.
Amused, Jack asked, โSo, Dr. Galloway, what are you saying?โ
โThe mastermind isnโt ordinary. I doubt we can find him with the instituteโs resources. Weโll likely need your help, Mr. Damaris,โ Colby stated firmly.
Jack stared at him intently. Just as Colby thought his plan was working, Jack asked unexpectedly, โIs it possible the fire was started by someone within the research institute? That would explain its efficiency.โ
Colbyโs expression subtly tightened. Did Jack truly not know the truth? Roxanne interjected, โThatโs impossible. No one at the institute would commit such a crime to harm others without personal gain, unless desperate.โ
Jack looked away from Colby. โJust a wild guess, Ms. Jarvis. Since youโre so certain, letโs forget it. Iโll help investigate further.โ
Roxanne grinned. โThank you, Mr. Damaris.โ Jack nodded. Those few minutes had Colby sweating, fearing exposure. Fortunately, Roxanne saved him. Without her, he would have jeopardized himself.
He replayed Jackโs words, overwhelmed by conflicting emotions. Had Jack noticed something? Was he testing him?
He forced himself to remain calm and wait. However, Jack never mentioned the fire again, and a troubled Roxanne remained silent for the rest of lunch. The three left the restaurant with different thoughts.
Roxanne assumed Jack would leave after eating, but he remained at the institute until evening. They discussed the medicinal herbs throughout the afternoon, thankfully reaching a satisfactory conclusion before leaving work. The three departed together.
After saying goodbye to the men, Roxanne approached her car, only to find the engine wouldn't start.
