Chapter 999: The Mastermind
Colby’s expression shifted when he heard Roxanne’s plan to treat Jack to a meal. His eyes instantly fixed on her. “Since when?” he blurted, intrigued. “How come I know nothing about this? Did you contact each other privately?”
Roxanne replied, “I suggested it last night while discussing the medicinal herbs with Mr. Damaris. He’s helped our institute immensely; this meal is a small token of our gratitude.” She turned to Jack, clarifying, “It’s not meant as repayment for your generosity.”
Jack didn’t seem fazed. He glanced at Colby, teasing Roxanne, “How, then, does Ms. Jarvis plan to repay me?” His gaze, coupled with the question, made Colby’s heart sink.
He quickly turned to Roxanne, awaiting her answer. With a serious expression, she stated, “I’ll ensure your sacrifice is worthwhile. I’ll use the herbs to achieve our desired research outcome.”
Colby breathed a silent sigh of relief. Jack smiled placidly. “I believe in you, Ms. Jarvis.” The trio then examined the delivered herbs.
Near noon, Roxanne suggested lunch, to which Jack readily agreed. “Do join us, Dr. Galloway,” she invited Colby. Slightly surprised, Colby glanced at Jack, who responded indifferently. “Let’s go together. You’ve worked hard on this project, Dr. Galloway.”
Colby nodded. They chose a nearby restaurant. After settling in, they let Roxanne order for them all.
“By the way,” Jack said abruptly, “how’s the fire investigation coming along?”
Colby’s body stiffened momentarily. Roxanne frowned. “We know an internal staff member was bribed, but the mastermind remains unknown.” A headache began to form.
Colby regained his composure, glancing at Jack, who wasn’t paying him any particular attention. Colby was initially suspicious that Jack had discovered something, but now he seemed genuinely concerned about the case.
“I’ve checked all institute staff,” Colby interjected, “and I can guarantee this won’t happen again. You needn’t worry about the herbs.”
Jack nodded. “I hope so. We should catch the culprit as soon as possible.” Roxanne agreed.
