Chapter 1004: No Wonder Children Love You
That night, before bed, Roxanne received a text from Jack detailing the medical consultation: two days hence, at a city orphanage. After noting the information, she replied briefly and went to sleep, though Colby's words kept her restless for some time.
Over the next two days, Archie and Benny persistently tried to get Roxanne's attention, ostensibly on Lucian's behalf. Unsure of their motives or how to respond, Roxanne focused on preparing for the consultation. Their attempts ceased when she began working.
Two days later, Jack's car arrived early. Roxanne, about to hail a cab, was surprised. "I figured your car wouldn't be ready, so I swung by," he smiled. Roxanne suppressed her surprise and entered the car. Having learned from a previous experience, she carried numerous gifts for the orphans. Jack was impressed by her preparations.
"You're really thoughtful," he remarked. "No wonder the children at the previous orphanage loved you."
A gentle smile touched Roxanne's lips. "Maybe it's because I've interacted with many children," she replied, explaining her empathy for children in orphanages and her desire to help them.
Instead of judgment, Jack simply said, "I'm sure the children will be very grateful this time as well." Roxanne smiled, and they departed.
Archie and Benny watched from the doorway, a sense of unease clouding their faces. Their parents hadn't spoken in two days, and Jack's frequent visits to Roxanne fueled their anxieties, despite her assurances that their relationship was purely professional. Their worry persisted, stemming from Roxanne's avoidance of Lucian. Exchanging worried glances, they looked crestfallen.
The orphanage was an hour's drive away. Upon arrival, the Damaris family's diagnostic and treatment setup was already in place. Unlike their last visit, Roxanne and Jack were immediately ushered into the director's office.
"Mr. Damaris. Dr. Jarvis," the director greeted enthusiastically. Roxanne's surprise at the director's familiarity with her quickly dissipated upon realizing Jack's prior communication.
After brief pleasantries, they began. The process mirrored the previous consultation, with children lining up for individual treatment, but this time, only Jack and Roxanne were in the tent, suggesting Jack's intention to share the Damaris family's medical knowledge with Roxanne.
