Chapter 1016: Even a Hairline Fracture Is Worth It
โSorry, Iโฆ was thinking about something earlier, and accidentally missed a step,โ Aubree murmured, feigning contrition after Catalina helped her onto the couch.
Lucian, standing behind them, remained silent. Aubreeโs heart sank. Hypocritically, she remarked, โI probably twisted my ankle. Let me rest before going to Mrs. Farwellโs to tell her about your condition.โ She smiled, hoping to elicit sympathy and permission to stay the night.
To her disappointment, Lucian merely nodded. He then crouched before her.
For a moment, she was speechless. Then, a sharp pain shot through her ankle, and her expression changed instantly.
โDoes it hurt?โ Lucian asked in a deep voice, his hand gently grasping her ankle.
Aubree nodded, gritting her teeth. He quickly released her ankle. โItโs likely a fracture.โ
Aubreeโs eyes lit up. โIs it that serious? Then, can Iโฆโ
Before she could request to stay at the manor, Lucian interrupted.
โHave Dr. Elswick come here,โ he instructed Catalina, averting his gaze.
Catalina contacted the family doctor. Aubree tried again to speak, but Lucianโs voice cut through the air.
โIf itโs severe, you might have to go to the hospital. Stay still and wait for Dr. Elswick.โ
While his words could be interpreted as concern, Aubree knew he was merely fulfilling his duties as host. His tone was too cold. Had she not fallen at his doorstep, he likely wouldn't have inquired about her condition. She recalled how heโd stayed with Roxanne all night when she was ill. Resentment surged; her expression darkened.
Lucian sat beside her, checking his emails. He clearly intended to leave her injury to the doctor. His apparent lack of concern fueled Aubreeโs envy, but she knew it wasn't the time to press the issue.
Almost half an hour later, Dr. Sonny arrived.
โWhatโs wrong, Catalina? Who was injured?โ
Catalina pointed to Aubree. โMs. Pearson fell on the stairs. Please check her.โ
Dr. Sonny, the Farwellsโ longtime family doctor, knew Aubree. He quickly examined her, and soon her groans filled the room.
Withdrawing his hand, he said solemnly, โIโm afraid itโs a hairline fracture. I canโt treat this here.โ
Surprise flickered in Aubreeโs eyes. A hairline fractureโฆ I only wanted to stay the night, and I never expected such a serious injury. But then again, Iโve broken my arm before. As long as I get what I want, even a fracture is worth it!
Lifting her eyes, she looked at Lucian hopefully. โGiven my injury, I should remain immobile. Might I intrude and stay here tonight?โ
