Chapter 1019: Other Obligations

The couple scowled. They knew Lucian intended to cancel the wedding, but they hadn't anticipated such harsh treatment of their daughter. He'd already explained Aubree's possible hairline fracture over the phone, yet hadn't offered assistance, despite knowing the severity. A photograph circulating would make their engagement a laughingstock. They considered their options before humbling themselves. "What happened, Aubree? How did you hurt yourself so badly?"

Ignoring Lucian's coldness, they focused on their daughter, taking over Sonny's role in assisting her. Aubree, overwhelmed by her parents' presence, scowled and refused to answer.

Sonny intervened. "Ms. Pearson fell down the stairs; her ankle is injured. It's not serious; a few days in a cast and rest will fix it."

Gina paled. "How can you call a fracture not serious?" Aubree met her mother's hostile tone with a pointed gaze. Realizing her mistake, Gina suppressed her anger.

A visit to an orthopedic specialist and X-rays revealed the full extent of Aubree's injury. They watched as her foot was cast.

Lucian checked the time, frowning. "Now that you're here, Mr. and Mrs. Pearson, I should be going." He nodded to them, then turned to Sonny. "You'll be responsible for Ms. Pearson's progress. Expedite her recovery."

Sonny readily agreed.

"Lucian!" Gina called, glancing between her daughter and Lucian's retreating back.

He paused. "Is there anything else?"

Gina offered a dry laugh. "Look how badly injured Aubree is. We've been busy lately and may not be able to manage her care. Why doesn't Aubree stay with youโ€”"

Lucian interrupted. "I'll send someone to care for her if necessary."

Gina gasped, turning to her husband with a furious expression.

Samuel, understanding his wife's plan, immediately added, "That's not what we meant. We wouldn't feel comfortable with an outsider caring for her."

Their meaning was clear: they wanted Aubree to stay at the Farwell residence. Samuel believed Lucian, still respectful of his elders, might agree. To his surprise, Lucian casually refused.

"In that case, I can send her to my mother's."

The Pearson family was stunned. However, Lucian had still shown respect by offering a reason. "I've been overwhelmed lately. Besides, I need to care for Essie. I have my own obligations."

Realizing their plan had failed, Gina and her husband gritted their teeth, swallowing their pride. Gina simpered, "There's no need to trouble Mrs. Farwell. I'll care for Aubree at home."

Lucian nodded curtly, then left with another brief nod.
