Chapter 1020: Aggrievance

Lucian's phone rang as he reached the hospital entrance. It was the home landline. "Daddy, when are you coming home?"

Estella's sweet voice filled his ear. "I'm on my way," Lucian replied gently. "Go to sleep; I'll be home soon."

Estella promised and hung up. It was late when Lucian arrived at his manor. He went directly to Estella's bedroom, as promised.

He found her still awake, watching him with indignation. Lucian frowned. "What's wrong this time?"

"You're so late!" Estella complained. "You were with Ms. Pearson, not Ms. Jarvis all night! I dislike her! It shouldn't have taken more than an hour to get home."

Lucian's brows twitched. She'd never complained when he was out all night with Roxanne. The difference in treatment was obvious.

"I ran into Mr. Pearson and Ms. Walker," he explained patiently, suppressing his exasperation. Estella's cheeks remained puffed.

Knowing further explanation was futile, Lucian remained silent. Estella pondered her next move. She wouldn't give up easily.

Finally, she steeled herself. "I don't want Ms. Pearson to be my mommy."

Lucian replied indifferently, "I know."

"I want Ms. Jarvis!" she insisted, staring at him.

Her reaction didn't surprise Lucian. His gaze grew grave.

"Please don't be mad at Ms. Jarvis, Daddy," Estella pleaded forlornly.

Lucian was silent for a long time before rising from the bed.

"Daddy!" Estella reached for his shirt, fearing he would leave.

Lucian remained still, his gaze falling on her small hand. Estella sensed his angerโ€”a rarity. Aware of this, she withdrew her hand, her face aggrieved.

"You promised, Daddy." He had even suggested it himself; now he was breaking his promise.

Lucian's gaze softened at the sight of his near-tearful daughter. He leaned over to comfort her, caressing her head.

Estella avoided his touch, pursing her lips. Helplessness flickered in Lucian's eyes.

"Relationships aren't guaranteed," he said. "I need to think about this."

Without waiting for a response, Lucian tucked her in and left.
