Chapter 1065: How Are We Born?
Roxanne breathed a sigh of relief as she entered the kitchen alone. Thank goodness Essie had come to her rescue. She hoped Jack wouldn't think she was being impertinent for not directly accepting his flowers.
In the living room, Jack sat on the couch, placing the flowers beside him. The children watched him from a distance. Sensing their gaze, he raised an eyebrow and addressed the boys. "Do you two like the gifts I gave you?" The boys exchanged a glance.
They hadn't opened Jack's gifts; they saw him as a potential rival for Lucian's affections. Despite their animosity, they felt compelled to answer him politely.
Archie smiled. "They're really fun. Thank you, Mr. Damaris." Estella snorted inaudibly. This was her first meeting with Jack, but her alarm bells had been ringing since his arrival. He's doing exactly what Daddy did when he was courting Ms. Jarvis! she thought. Early morning visits, ostensibly concerned about her health, and now flowers! He must be pursuing her!
She was furious, especially considering her father's lingering anger toward Roxanne. Archie and Benny sensed her rage and its cause.
Benny began, "Mr. Damaris, I saw on TV that flowers are only given to people you like. So why did you buy Mommy flowers?"
Jack was momentarily stunned. "Friends can give each other flowers, too."
Benny ignored him. "If you like Mommy, I suggest you give up because she already has someone in her heart!"
Surprise flickered across Jack's face. "Oh?"
Benny met his gaze assertively. "Mommy likes Daddy!"
Roxanne's expression changed upon hearing this, entering from the kitchen. "What are you talking about, Benny?"
The boy pouted, serious. "Isn't that true? If you don't like Daddy, then how are we born?"
While the boys didn't know their father's identity, Roxanne did. Connecting Benny's words to Estella's comments from the previous night, a peculiar sensation welled up inside her. Feeling it inappropriate to refute Benny, she changed the subject. "All right, that's enough. Essie's hungry. Let's eat."
The children immediately lined up at the dining table. Roxanne turned to Jack. "Have you eaten, Mr. Damaris? Join us if you haven't."
The children stopped, staring at Jack. He pursed his lips. "No, thank you. I ate before I came."
The children resumed their previous activities. Roxanne nodded and ate breakfast with the children, though their attentiveness was somewhat diminished by Jack's presence.
