Chapter 1072: Play Along

At noon, Roxanne finished preparing lunch when the doorbell rang. After two warnings from Jack that morning, Roxanne and the children were now desensitized to the doorbell's chime, even though they suspected it was Lucian. Roxanne set the table before answering the door. As expected, Lucian stood outside. He gave her a curt nod. "Where is Essie? I'm here to take her home."

He glanced toward the living room. The children held their breath, straining to hear his movements. At the mention of Estella's name, the boys simultaneously turned to her. Estella reluctantly met their gaze, her cheeks puffed. Their plan was for her to return with Lucian, attempting to persuade him, while the boys worked on changing Roxanne's mind. This, they hoped, would soon reconcile Lucian and Roxanne. Estella, however, felt reluctant to leave Roxanne and her brothers.

Roxanne's voice interrupted her hesitation. "Are you in a hurry? If not, join us for lunch."

Their expressions shifted dramatically. The children rejoiced at Roxanne's invitation, while Lucian remained uncertain of its implications. Roxanne turned, glancing at the dining room. Lowering her voice, she said, "I need to talk to you about Essie," meeting Lucian's gaze directly.

Lucian's brows furrowed, but he accepted, following her into the dining room. The children, thrilled but subdued, watched him enter. Benny hung his head, concealing his excitement. This is wonderful! he thought. It's been ages since Mom and Dad shared a meal. This means things are improving, right?

Throughout lunch, the children stole glances at Roxanne and Lucian. Roxanne, aware of their thoughts, looked away, conflicted emotions swirling within her. Lucian, too, perceived their silent observations, becoming increasingly intrigued by Roxanne's actions. He subtly raised his head, seeking a clearer view of her. The sight of her eating diligently, however, caused his gaze to harden and his appetite to vanish.

"I'm done," Lucian stated, setting down his fork, his face impassive.

"Daddy..." Estella, believing he intended to leave immediately, tugged his sleeve pleadingly. "Let's go home later!"

Lucian's brows drew together. He patted her head. "I need to speak with Ms. Jarvis. You can play with your brothers a little longer."

Roxanne's earlier lowered voice had indicated a desire for secrecy. The matter concerned his daughter, so Lucian decided to cooperate. Estella, unaware of their planned conversation, felt a wave of relief at the prospect of more time with Archie and Benny, a broad smile spreading across her face.
