Chapter 1073: Any Problem with That?
Roxanne felt acutely uncomfortable under Lucianโs intense gaze, despite her efforts to ignore him. His answer brought a silent sigh of relief; she set down her fork.
โLetโs talk upstairs,โ she said, turning to the children. โFinish your lunch before you go play.โ
Archie and Benny nodded enthusiastically. Roxanne rose, giving Lucian a pointed look. He understood and followed her upstairs.
They paused on the second-floor balcony. Roxanne remained silent, unsure how to begin. Even after Estellaโs apology, she couldn't believe the child capable of such an act. Lucian, deeply devoted to Estella, wouldn't believe her. A blunt revelation would likely make him think she was falsely accusing Estella.
Her prolonged silence darkened Lucianโs expression. โMs. Jarvis, what is this about?โ
Roxanne snapped out of her reverie. She opened her mouth, but words failed her.
Lucianโs brow furrowed. โDonโt tell me you tricked me to keep Essie here longer.โ
His words recalled his earlier suspicion that sheโd orchestrated Archie and Bennyโs visit to the Farwell residence. Sheโd failed to clear that up then; another misunderstanding would irrevocably damage his trust.
Frowning, Roxanne said, โEssie is your daughter; she should go home with you. Why would I resort to tricks to keep her?โ
Lucian eyed her skeptically. โThen speak. What is it?โ
Roxanne took a deep breath, meeting his gaze. โI believe Essie grew up by your side, didnโt she?โ
Lucian remained silent for a moment. Roxanne saw a flicker of somethingโmockery, perhapsโcross his face, momentarily stunning her. Sheโd only asked about Essieโs upbringing to gauge his understanding of her character. Why was he angry?
Her confusion only fueled Lucianโs anger. Sheโs Essieโs birth mother, but she played no part in her childhood. How dare she ask me that? Despite recognizing the misunderstanding, Lucian seethed silently.
Finally, he replied stiffly, โYes. Any problem with that?โ
Roxanne, sensing the tension, carefully asked, โThen what do you think of Essieโs character?โ
Lucian replied calmly, โEssie has always been a good girl.โ
Roxanneโs displeasure was evident. Lucian, never breaking eye contact, saw the change in her expression, further intensifying his anger.
โWhat do you think, Ms. Jarvis? Essie was diagnosed with autism at a young age. You saw her when she was ill. What do you think someone like her would be like?โ
