Chapter 1073: Any Problem with That?

Roxanne felt acutely uncomfortable under Lucian’s intense gaze, despite her efforts to ignore him. His answer brought a silent sigh of relief; she set down her fork.

“Let’s talk upstairs,” she said, turning to the children. “Finish your lunch before you go play.”

Archie and Benny nodded enthusiastically. Roxanne rose, giving Lucian a pointed look. He understood and followed her upstairs.

They paused on the second-floor balcony. Roxanne remained silent, unsure how to begin. Even after Estella’s apology, she couldn't believe the child capable of such an act. Lucian, deeply devoted to Estella, wouldn't believe her. A blunt revelation would likely make him think she was falsely accusing Estella.

Her prolonged silence darkened Lucian’s expression. “Ms. Jarvis, what is this about?”

Roxanne snapped out of her reverie. She opened her mouth, but words failed her.

Lucian’s brow furrowed. “Don’t tell me you tricked me to keep Essie here longer.”

His words recalled his earlier suspicion that she’d orchestrated Archie and Benny’s visit to the Farwell residence. She’d failed to clear that up then; another misunderstanding would irrevocably damage his trust.

Frowning, Roxanne said, “Essie is your daughter; she should go home with you. Why would I resort to tricks to keep her?”

Lucian eyed her skeptically. “Then speak. What is it?”

Roxanne took a deep breath, meeting his gaze. “I believe Essie grew up by your side, didn’t she?”

Lucian remained silent for a moment. Roxanne saw a flicker of something—mockery, perhaps—cross his face, momentarily stunning her. She’d only asked about Essie’s upbringing to gauge his understanding of her character. Why was he angry?

Her confusion only fueled Lucian’s anger. She’s Essie’s birth mother, but she played no part in her childhood. How dare she ask me that? Despite recognizing the misunderstanding, Lucian seethed silently.

Finally, he replied stiffly, “Yes. Any problem with that?”

Roxanne, sensing the tension, carefully asked, “Then what do you think of Essie’s character?”

Lucian replied calmly, “Essie has always been a good girl.”

Roxanne’s displeasure was evident. Lucian, never breaking eye contact, saw the change in her expression, further intensifying his anger.

“What do you think, Ms. Jarvis? Essie was diagnosed with autism at a young age. You saw her when she was ill. What do you think someone like her would be like?”
