“No longer related?” Lucian’s sarcasm was sharp. “That’s wishful thinking.”

Roxanne frowned. “I’m stating facts! You used me, and now you’re with Aubree. How are we related?”

Lucian’s voice was icy. “Perhaps. But do you think Essie will easily give you up after your kindness?”

Roxanne was speechless.

Lucian continued, “You gave her false hope, leading to her actions, and you don't even realize it.”

Later, Roxanne spoke. “If that’s the case, I’ll do as you and Mrs. Farwell wish. I won’t interfere in Essie’s life anymore.”

Lucian had considered her earlier concern for Estella insincere. Now, her easy surrender angered him.

Before she could ponder, Lucian loomed over her.

Roxanne’s head snapped up. “What are you doing?”

He cupped her chin, forcing eye contact. Their faces were so close she felt his breath. The intimacy was undeniable.

Roxanne balled her fists. “Mr. Farwell, let me go! I’ve agreed to your wishes!”

His grip tightened with her every protest. Roxanne winced in pain.

“My wishes?” Lucian’s voice was cold. “You do as you wish. Who do you think you are?”

Shock registered in Roxanne’s eyes. She was speechless. She had always dictated Estella's life.

Before she could analyze the situation, Lucian suggested, “Ms. Jarvis, if you’re so invested in Essie’s affairs, why not take it further? Become her mother.”
