Chapter 1087: Make It Up to Her

Lucian silently sized her up for a long moment. Learning she'd sought a psychologist regarding the incident, his hostility lessened. His tone softened as he said, "That's very thoughtful of you."

Aubree's heart leaped at the change in his voice. "It was my duty. After hitting her, it's no surprise she disliked me. It's all my fault, Lucian, and I'll take responsibility."

Unmoved, Lucian continued indifferently, "In that case, do you want to make it up to her?"

Aubree nodded immediately. "I've wanted to apologize but haven't had the chance."

"Then spend some time with her. Essie will be home for the next few days, and I'll be busy. If you have time, come over."

Lucian was implicitly entrusting Estella to her care. Aubree pinched herself, unsure if she was dreaming. Was thisโ€”being asked to watch Essie while he workedโ€”equivalent to granting her access to the manor whenever she pleased?

It was a dream come true, one she hadn't imagined achieving so easily.

"Essie's mood has been volatile. Since you've learned from the psychologist how to interact with her, you know what to do. Don't repeat the mistake. She can't endure more emotional shocks."

Aubree listened, nodding fervently. Only after Lucian finished did she express surprise. "Lucian, do you meanโ€ฆ you'll continue our engagement?"

After a silent frown, Lucian nodded. "As long as Essie accepts you."

"Thenโ€ฆ" Aubree feigned uncertainty. "What about Ms. Jarvis? Essie's birth mother. Don't you want to reconcile with her?"

Lucian scowled, rising abruptly. "Don't mention that woman to me! If you want to continue the engagement, take good care of Essie. Don't interfere in anything else!"

He refused to hear Roxanne's name.

Aubree was stunned. "Okay, I won't."

Lucian dismissed her with a wave, not looking at her. "Essie's in her room. Visit her if you wish; otherwise, go home."

He turned to the window, ending the conversation. Aubree froze; she wasn't foolish. His agreement to continue the engagement wasn't based on feelings for her. He'd simply given up on Roxanne. Moreover, it wasn't final; she was still on probation. Still, it was better than being ignored.

Aubree regained her composure, her eyes resolute. She would seize this opportunity to secure her marriage to Lucian.

Smiling, she rose. "In that case, I won't take up more of your time. I'll see Essie now."

She turned and left.
