Chapter 1086: Give You Time

Catalina left the door ajar as she departed. Aubree found Lucian in his study. "Lucian, I'm here," she announced, entering after a knock. He'd heard her approach but only turned at her voice; she already wore a gentle smile.

Despite his decision to accept her, Lucian felt a persistent unease whenever he saw her. Silence stretched between them. Aubree, hesitant to speak first, finally asked, "Is there something you wanted to see me for?"

Snapping back to attention, Lucian suppressed his doubts. "Come in and have a seat," he replied, his voice deep.

Aubree smiled, seated herself on the central couch. Lucian sat in an armchair, his expression conflicted, his hesitation palpable. Silence settled over the study, Aubree's anticipation morphing into anxiety.

She recalled Sonya's phone call, confirming Lucian's move on from Roxanne and his intention to continue their engagement. Yet, he seemed far from ready.

Lost in their respective thoughts, a knock interrupted them. Catalina entered with coffee. "Mr. Farwell, Ms. Pearson."

Lucian's slight nod dismissed her after she served them. "Thank you," Aubree murmured politely, a stark contrast to her past behavior. Catalina froze momentarily before recovering her composure and exiting.

After a sip of coffee, Lucian spoke. "I have let you down over the last six years."

Aubree's eyes brightened, then dimmed. Affecting a wry smile, she replied, "It's no big deal. I was willing to give you time."

Lucian studied her intently before setting down his cup. His tone remained formal. "I would like to hear your thoughts on Essie."

A flash of hatred crossed Aubree's eyes, instantly replaced by adoration and guilt as she looked at Lucian. "I watched her grow up, so naturally, I'm fond of her. Furthermore, her health hasn't been good; she's autistic. Despite my concern, I feel powerless to helpโ€ฆ" Her gaze dropped. "If only I could have gotten Essie to like me sooner, she might not have withdrawn from the world."

Lucian observed her intently, detecting no insincerity. His brows furrowed skeptically; he remained wary. Her performance, if an act, was flawless.

"After I impulsively struck Essie, I sought a psychologist to learn how to interact with autistic children," Aubree said, glancing at Lucian. "But her condition improved before I had the chance to apply what I learned."
