Chapter 1098
Just as Jonathan was about to give up, declaring it none of his business, Lucian spoke. "I don't think I should give up so easily either. After all, the woman is Essie's biological mother."
Jonathan brightened. "Does Dr. Jarvis know about her relationship with Essie? If she doesn't, you should tell her. I'm sure she'll change her mind."
He'd considered this for a long time, but as it was Lucian's family matter, the decision rested with him. However, sensing their impending separation, Jonathan felt compelled to suggest it.
Lucian's hand, holding his wineglass, froze. Tell Essie's mother? Maybe he would have considered it if Roxanne hadn't given up on him... but now, it was pointless.
Jonathan, believing his suggestion brilliant, awaited Lucian's response with anticipation. "If you still want her back, this is the best way!"
A moment later, Lucian quietly finished his drink. "No."
Jonathan's eyes widened. He's really giving up on Roxanne!
"She can't give me what I want, and she can't give Essie what Essie needs. What I can give her isn't what she wants either," Lucian explained.
Jonathan blinked, bewildered. "Why do you say that?"
Lucian closed his eyes, remembering their past. "Essie wants her mother, but Roxanne is preoccupied with the Damaris family project. Even when Essie reached out, she left the children to care for her."
It was the same as last time. The girl was miserable, and Roxanne, despite hearing it, prioritized her work. Lucian's lips pursed, the air growing colder. "Initially, I hoped she'd stay in the country for the project, but she's thrown herself into it completely."
He still couldn't determine if Roxanne valued the project for its own sake or because of the person in charge.
Jonathan nearly jumped at the shift in Lucian's mood, but Lucian's words amused him. A smile spread across his face.
"Why are you smiling?" Lucian asked, his gaze cold.
Jonathan's smile remained. "I'm thinking about how even you can't escape this."
Lucian frowned.
Jonathan cleared his throat, pausing before speaking. "You say Dr. Jarvis is too focused on her work and has neglected Essie and your feelings. But consider this: didn't you do the same to Dr. Jarvis six years ago?"
