Chapter 1171

The seconds ticked by, the emergency room doors remaining shut. Lucianโ€™s heart grew heavy as he waited in the silent corridor. At least five specialists were inside! What was taking so long? How was Roxanne? He almost opened the door to check on her, but he knew he needed to be rational.

"Stay calm, Lucian," he murmured.

Dismissing the thought, he slumped against the corridor bench. It was as the director had said: Roxanne was a doctor who had saved countless lives. She was kind; she would be alright. For the sake of their children, she would fight. His thoughts were interrupted by a ringing phone.

Hoping it was important, he quickly pulled out his phone. Aubree's name on the caller ID caused his face to fall; he declined the call without hesitation. He was about to put the phone away when he noticed the timeโ€”it was evening. The children would be getting out of school soon.

Massaging his aching forehead, he glanced at the still-closed emergency room doors, trying to calm himself. Regaining his composure, he dialed Caydenโ€™s number. The call connected after a few rings.

"How may I help you, Mr. Farwell?" Cayden asked anxiously. Heโ€™d been the one to inform Lucian of Roxanne's poisoning, and Lucian had been gone a long time. Cayden naturally feared the worst.

Lucianโ€™s voice was exhausted. "I need you to pick up Archie and Benny from kindergarten."

Caydenโ€™s heart sank, confirming his suspicions. Realizing something bad had happened, he cautiously replied, "Understood. Where shall I send them after picking them up, Mr. Farwell?"

Those two are still so young! He couldn't take them to their unconscious mother. Their hearts wouldn't handle such shocking news.

"Send them home," Lucian replied after a moment's thought.

"What if they ask about Ms. Jarvis? What will I tell them?" Cayden asked, worried for the boys.

Lucian hadn't considered that. He didn't know when, or even if, Roxanne would be coming home. He couldn't be sure she'd even make it out of the emergency room.

Cayden was frantic at the prolonged silence. Finally, Lucian said, "Do as you see fit," before hanging up before Cayden could ask more questions.

Cayden stared blankly at his phone. "Do as I see fit?" How could he know what to tell them without knowing Ms. Jarvis's condition? Archie and Benny were incredibly smart; he couldn't lie, but he couldn't tell them Ms. Jarvis's life was in danger either. He was in a terrible dilemma.

Class would end soon. Suppressing his feelings, Cayden steeled himself and headed to the kindergarten.
