Chapter 118: Not Her Child
Roxanne found Lucian's words humorous, remembering his vow six years prior to marry only Aubree. He had treated Roxanne coldly for taking Aubree's place.
"I find that hard to believe, Lucian," Roxanne said, her voice bitter. "You claim no involvement in Aubree's actions, but your past words and actions tell a different story. How can I trust you?"
Lucian's face hardened. "People change, Roxanne. I've acknowledged my mistakes and am trying to make amends. Give me a chance to prove it."
Roxanne shook her head resolutely. "I can't risk letting you or Aubree hurt my boys again. They're my priority, and I won't gamble their well-being on empty promises."
Pain flickered in Lucian's eyes, quickly masked by determination. "I understand your reluctance, but I'm not asking for blind trust. Let my actions speak. I'll keep Aubree away from Archie and Benny, and ensure their education is uninterrupted."
Torn between protecting her children and a faint hope, Roxanne hesitated. "I'll hold you to your word, Lucian. But if anything happens to my boys, I will take legal action against you and Aubree."
Lucian nodded solemnly. "You have my word, Roxanne. I won't let you down."
Roxanne turned and left Lucian alone, contemplating how to regain her trust and shield the children from Aubree.
Reaching her car, Roxanne breathed deeply, trying to compose herself. She couldn't lower her guard, not with her sons' safety at stake. They'd already endured enough.
The drive home was silent, the conversation weighing heavily on her mind. She needed strength for Archie and Benny, and couldn't let her feelings for Lucian cloud her judgment.
Her sons were waiting, their worried faces softening at her arrival. "Mommy, are you okay?" Benny asked, concerned.
Roxanne smiled, hugging them tightly. "I'm fine, my loves. Everything will be alright."
That night, tucking them in, she considered Lucian's words. A part of her wanted to believe in his change, his genuine care. But past scars weren't easily forgotten. Watching them sleep, she whispered, "I'll protect you both, no matter what. No one will ever hurt you again."
The following days blurred into routine and work. Roxanne focused on her job at the research institute, a distraction from her worries. She closely monitored Archie and Benny's adjustment back at kindergarten.
True to his word, Lucian had spoken to the head of the kindergarten, and the boys were readmitted without issue. Roxanne was relieved but wary, knowing Aubree remained a threat.
One afternoon, while working, she received a call from Lucian. Hesitantly, she answered.
"Roxanne," Lucian said, "I've ensured Aubree stays away from the boys. Any interference will have serious consequences."
Roxanne felt relief and skepticism. "I appreciate that, Lucian. But it will take more than words to earn my trust back."
"I understand," Lucian replied earnestly. "I'm willing to do whatever it takes. Know that I care about Archie and Benny, and want to be a positive influence."
Roxanne sighed, conflicted. "We'll see, Lucian. For now, let's focus on keeping the boys safe and happy."
"Agreed," Lucian said. "Thank you for giving me a chance, Roxanne."
Hanging up, Roxanne felt uncertain. She wanted to believe in Lucian's change, but only time would tell. Until then, she resolved to remain vigilant, protecting her children above all else. They were her world; their safety and happiness were paramount.
