Chapter 1208
Realizing he was about to leave, Roxanne instinctively grabbed his arm. Lucian's presence was her only comfort in her pain; the thought of him leaving filled her with fear and anxiety. Everyone in the ward was shocked.
Lucian felt a surge of emotion. As if coaxing a child, he said gently, "Roxanne, you need to let the doctors examine you so your headache will go away. Don't worry, I'll be right here. They can't examine you if you don't let go."
The specialists exchanged glances, sensing something unusual in their relationship. Roxanne slowly released Lucian's arm, but kept her gaze on him.
With a worried frown, Lucian told the specialists, "Please examine her." They began their examination. Roxanne's intense reaction spoke volumes of her pain.
"This headache is caused by a strong surge of emotions," the specialist explained. "The patient has been suppressing them."
After completing the examination, the specialist solemnly addressed Lucian. "However, the headache will last quite some time. I suggest we give her an injection for the pain."
Lucian's expression darkened. A strong surge of emotions? Was it because he'd mentioned searching for Archie and Benny's father? Had she stayed up all night worrying about that man? Did she care that much?
"Mr. Farwell?" the specialist prompted when Lucian remained silent.
Snapped from his thoughts, Lucian nodded. "Go ahead."
The specialists, mindful of Lucian's presence, chose their most skilled member to administer the injection, rather than delegating the task to a nurse.
Roxanne's headache subsided after the injection. The specialists then advised Lucian on her aftercare before leaving.
Roxanne lay weakly on the bed, feeling incredibly embarrassed. Her head still ached slightly, but she vividly remembered her earlier actions toward Lucian. Alone in the ward, she kept her eyes closed, unsure how to face him.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know you'd react so strongly," Lucian's voice murmured beside her ear.
Roxanne's eyelids fluttered; her headache was returning. Before it worsened, she opened her eyes. "Well, you know now, so stop talking about it."
Lucian frowned slightly. "Again, I'm sorry. I should have been more careful."
"I'm tired. Please leave, Mr. Farwell," Roxanne mumbled, closing her eyes again. She wanted him gone; the injection made her uncomfortable.
Roxanne's vulnerability in illness allowed Lucian to see through her pretense. After watching her for a moment, he realized she wasn't faking this time. His heart sank, remembering her unconsciousness earlier that afternoon.
