Chapter 1234
Colby grew increasingly nervous; Lucian hadn't yet responded. He reassured himself that Lucian's silence meant the altered footage hadn't been detected. As long as he hadn't made a mistake, Jack remained the prime suspect. This thought bolstered his confidence, and he relaxed.
After some time, Lucian rose from his seat, his expression unchanged. Colby promptly asked, "Where would you like to check next, Mr. Farwell?"
Lucian, still contemplating the footage, replied, "Let's examine the research facility."
"Excellent!" Colby breathed a sigh of relief. He was sure Lucian hadn't noticed anything. The altered footage had worked. He'd already replaced the medicine on the research table; exposure was impossible.
Cheerfully, he guided Lucian to the facility. En route, Lucian passed numerous researchers, all visibly intimidated by his imposing presence; none dared greet him.
They soon arrived. Without Colby's guidance, Lucian went directly to the research table Roxanne had used. After a brief examination, he noted the medicine was all new. Frigidly, he asked, "Who replaced these?"
Colby quickly explained, "Drs. Jarvis and Damaris nearly finished using them yesterday. Furthermore, given Dr. Jarvis's condition, we weren't certain if the medicine was a contributing factor. We replaced them with fresh supplies to prevent a recurrence."
It was a plausible explanation, one he believed even Lucian couldn't refute. Roxanne's experiment might be halted, but other research continued, and the staff still needed to handle potentially hazardous materials. This eliminated another potential lead for Lucian.
Placing several bottles before Lucian, Colby said, "These are the medicines Drs. Jarvis and Damaris used. I wonder if the difference stems from a change in manufacturer."
Lucian looked at him quizzically. "While the type of medicine remains the same, different manufacturers produce variations. This can affect experimental results. We usually conduct pre-tests when switching manufacturers; it seems there was an oversight."
Lucian eyed the bottles and instructed, "Take these to my car." A new lead had presented itself; he would have the medicines inspected.
Colby swiftly dispatched staff members. Hypocritically, he asked, "Anything else, Mr. Farwell?"
Lucian, dissatisfied, replied, "That's all for now. Recover the original medicines from the lab table."
Colby panicked. The recovery of those bottles could expose him.
Sensing his hesitation, Lucian stared frigidly. "It's only been one night. Are you suggesting they've been destroyed?"
Colby stammered, "N-Not yet. I'll retrieve them as soon as I can."
