Chapter 1274

Aubree spent two days recovering in the hospital before her arm showed improvement. Gina rushed to the hospital early the next morning, alarmed by news of her daughter's injury.

"What happened? How are you feeling? Why didn't you tell me?" Gina asked, distress etched on her face as she saw Aubree in a hospital gown.

Aubree shook her head, her voice hoarse. "I'm fine. My injury's healed; there was no need to tell you." She'd spent the past two days in tears, unable to do anything with her injured arm, and hadn't wanted her parents to see her like that.

Only when Gina heard Aubree's voice did she notice the puffiness around her daughter's eyes. Her heart sank. "What happened? Why were you crying? Who hurt you?"

Tears welled up in Aubree's eyes. The weight of her troubles overwhelmed her in her mother's presence.

"Tell me what happened! Don't keep it bottled up!" Gina urged, sitting beside the bed.

Finally, Aubree broke down, sobbing into her mother's arms. "Mom, Lucianโ€ฆ Lucian wants to call off our engagement!"

Gina's expression froze. "What did you say?" she gasped.

Aubree repeated her words in a choked voice. The shock hit Gina hard. Lucian wanting to end their six-year engagement was incomprehensible.

Suddenly, an idea struck Gina. "Be honest," she demanded, staring at Aubree. "How did you get hurt? Did you fight with Roxanne again?"

Aubree sobbed silently, giving Gina her answer. Gina's brow furrowed. "How foolish!" she exclaimed. Aubree was so close to becoming mistress of the Farwell family, having been allowed to care for Essie. Why had she provoked Roxanne?

"She's a bitch! Lucian stayed at the hospital all night with her. He even sent Essie back to her! If I hadn't gone to see her, he might have married her behind our backs!" Aubree cried, her voice laced with bitterness.

Another wave of shock washed over Gina. Lucian hadn't given up on Roxanne?

Aubree continued to weep in her mother's arms. Gina, unable to scold her, patted her back gently. "Don't cry. As long as the news hasn't spread, there's still hope."

Aubree lifted her tear-streaked face, a flicker of hope in her eyes. "Butโ€ฆ you didn't see Lucian's attitude. What can I do?"

Gina gritted her teeth. "If all else fails, see Mrs. Farwell before it's too late! She'll stop them."

Aubree's eyes flickered. She'd sought Sonya's help before, to no avail. I've tried so many times, but Lucian still wants to break it off! she thought.

"Even if she can't change Lucian's mind, she can at least help us get rid of Roxanne," Gina added softly, sensing her daughter's hesitation.

After a while, a cold glint appeared in Aubree's eyes, and her tears finally subsided.
