Chapter 1275
That night, Aubree, injured, went to the Farwell main residence. Sonya, strolling in the garden after dinner, greeted her warmly. "Aubree! What's kept you so busy these past few days?"
Aubree merely pursed her lips and lowered her head. Sonya, puzzled, approached. "What's wrong? Did Lucian bother you again?"
Aubree nodded, then shook her head, sniffling softly. Sonya's heart sank. She led Aubree into the living room, ordering coffee. "Elias isn't here tonight. Tell me everything."
Aubree looked up. Sonya, realizing she hadn't seen Aubree's face clearly earlier, saw the puffiness around her eyes; she'd been crying. "Why are you so upset? Did Lucian bully you? Tell me, and I'll help!"
Sonya, distressed, embraced Aubree. "This is outrageous! He's marrying you soon! Don't worry, I'll speak to him!"
The mention of marriage broke Aubree. Tears streamed down her face. "Mrs. Farwellโฆ there's no needโฆ"
Sonya frowned, confused. Aubree wept uncontrollably, trembling. "Lucianโฆ he's called off our engagement! Pretend it never happened. Even if I can't be your daughter-in-law, I'll still care for you."
Sonya's face darkened. "Stop crying! Tell me what happened! How could he make such a decision?" The Farwell-Pearson marriage agreement had long been established, and Sonya had always approved of Aubree. "How could he cancel it without asking me? Does he think this is his sole decision?"
Aubree recounted the events of the previous day. She'd gone to pick up Essie, but Ms. Jarvis refused, calling her a shrew. A conflict ensued. "I might have been harsh, but she insulted me first. Worse, she hit me. My arm still hurts."
Sonya saw Aubree's arm, her eyes blazing. Roxanne had hurt Aubree before. This was not merely an attack on Aubree; it was a challenge to Sonya herself. "What audacity! Is Roxanne trying to defy me?" She looked firmly at Aubree. "Don't worry, I'll get justice for you!"
