Chapter 1287
Roxanne was about to send the children upstairs to rest when the doorbell rang. Archie and Benny, believing it was Lucian returning with Estella, excitedly ran to answer, despite Roxanne's attempts to stop them. Upon seeing the visitor, they were taken aback.
"Where's Roxanne?" Sonya asked, glancing at the children with disdain.
Archie and Benny's joy quickly faded, replaced by apprehension at their grandmother's obvious displeasure after their pleasant time with Lucian. Sonya didn't wait for a reply, turning towards the living room where she spotted Roxanne approaching. Hearing Sonya's voice, Roxanne had hurried out, concerned for her children.
"Mrs. Farwell, it's late. Is something the matter?" Roxanne asked, calmly shielding the children behind her before meeting Sonya's gaze.
Sonya sized Roxanne up. "Let's go in and talk."
A crease appeared between Roxanne's brows. Hesitating only briefly, she stepped aside to allow Sonya entry. It was just Sonya; at worst, a few unpleasant words. If Lucian were with her, this confrontation would be inevitable.
Seeing Sonya admitted, the children grew nervous, fearing she would bully Roxanne like Aubree and Frieda had.
Roxanne watched Sonya settle onto the couch, then squatted to address Archie and Benny. "You guys head upstairs and get some rest. I have some words to say to her."
Archie, concerned, grasped his mother's hand. "We want to accompany you!" Benny nodded eagerly.
Roxanne felt a warmth of affection at their worry, offering reassuring pats. "Don't worry. We're only talking. Nothing will happen. You've played all day and must be tired. Go upstairs and wash up."
The boys remained hesitant. Feeling helpless, Roxanne glanced at Sonya. Seeing Sonya wasn't looking at them, she promised, "Even if we fight, she's no match for me. You guys know that."
Remembering Roxanne's earlier defense against two people, the boys finally nodded. Before leaving, they politely greeted Sonya, "Good night, Mrs. Farwell."
Sonya snorted, ignoring them. Disappointed but silent, the children went upstairs.
Roxanne then entered the living room, brewing coffee for herself and Sonya before sitting beside her. "It's just the two of us now. You don't have to pretend anymore. I'm not falling for it!"
Sonya eyed the coffee, making no attempt to conceal her disdain.
Roxanne replied calmly, "It's basic courtesy. Even if it were Ms. Pearson, I'd do the same. If you don't like it, you don't have to drink it."
Sonya, enraged by Roxanne's nonchalance, shoved the cup away and glared. "Tell me, what does it take for you to stay away from my son? Is it money? Name your price; if I can, I will satisfy your demands."
