Chapter 1368

โ€œAre you going to Jadeborough on business?โ€ Roxanne asked, unable to contain her question as the car accelerated.

Lucian nodded, his gaze fixed on the road. โ€œThereโ€™s an account problem I need to address.โ€

Suspicion flickered in Roxanneโ€™s eyes. โ€œAnd you have to go yourself?โ€ She found his personal involvement excessive, despite her limited business knowledge.

Lucianโ€™s expression remained unchanged. โ€œThe person in charge is a Farwell. Someone else might not be able to manage them, so I must go.โ€

It was a reasonable explanation, and Roxanne reluctantly accepted it. Sheโ€™d assumed Lucianโ€™s work involved mostly office strategy, unaware of the numerous smaller issues demanding his attention.

โ€œWhat about you? Why are you going on a business trip so soon after recovering?โ€ Lucian turned, giving her an inscrutable look.

Guilt washed over her. Sheโ€™d prepared to tell him the truth, but the words failed her. โ€œIโ€ฆโ€ she hesitated, then offered an evasive reply, โ€œIโ€™m helping with an emergency at a nursing home in Jadeborough.โ€

โ€œHelping out?โ€ Lucian echoed, puzzled. โ€œWith whom? Is it through the research institute?โ€

Roxanne averted her gaze sheepishly. โ€œNo. The Damaris family contacted me yesterday. Mr. Damaris said the situation is critical, and Iโ€™ll have an opportunity to learn from them, soโ€ฆโ€

She glanced in the rearview mirror, expecting his disapproval of her travel plans with Jack. His expression remained unreadable, however; he merely nodded. โ€œYou should go if the geriatrics need help. Take care of yourself and avoid overworking.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s it? You have nothing else to say?โ€ Roxanne blurted out.

Lucian raised an eyebrow in surprise. Regret immediately flooded her; sheโ€™d said too much. Words, once spoken, couldnโ€™t be taken back.

After a long silence, Lucianโ€™s voice filled the car. โ€œThereโ€™s nothing to say. Saving patients is your job, and I canโ€™t choose your work partner. Jack is an exceptional doctor. Iโ€™m confident youโ€™ll both maintain a strictly professional relationship.โ€

A dissonance jarred herโ€”his previous prejudice toward Jack contrasted sharply with his current words. Lost in her astonishment, she didnโ€™t notice Lucianโ€™s white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel. He clearly didn't mean what he said.
