Chapter 1368
โAre you going to Jadeborough on business?โ Roxanne asked, unable to contain her question as the car accelerated.
Lucian nodded, his gaze fixed on the road. โThereโs an account problem I need to address.โ
Suspicion flickered in Roxanneโs eyes. โAnd you have to go yourself?โ She found his personal involvement excessive, despite her limited business knowledge.
Lucianโs expression remained unchanged. โThe person in charge is a Farwell. Someone else might not be able to manage them, so I must go.โ
It was a reasonable explanation, and Roxanne reluctantly accepted it. Sheโd assumed Lucianโs work involved mostly office strategy, unaware of the numerous smaller issues demanding his attention.
โWhat about you? Why are you going on a business trip so soon after recovering?โ Lucian turned, giving her an inscrutable look.
Guilt washed over her. Sheโd prepared to tell him the truth, but the words failed her. โIโฆโ she hesitated, then offered an evasive reply, โIโm helping with an emergency at a nursing home in Jadeborough.โ
โHelping out?โ Lucian echoed, puzzled. โWith whom? Is it through the research institute?โ
Roxanne averted her gaze sheepishly. โNo. The Damaris family contacted me yesterday. Mr. Damaris said the situation is critical, and Iโll have an opportunity to learn from them, soโฆโ
She glanced in the rearview mirror, expecting his disapproval of her travel plans with Jack. His expression remained unreadable, however; he merely nodded. โYou should go if the geriatrics need help. Take care of yourself and avoid overworking.โ
โThatโs it? You have nothing else to say?โ Roxanne blurted out.
Lucian raised an eyebrow in surprise. Regret immediately flooded her; sheโd said too much. Words, once spoken, couldnโt be taken back.
After a long silence, Lucianโs voice filled the car. โThereโs nothing to say. Saving patients is your job, and I canโt choose your work partner. Jack is an exceptional doctor. Iโm confident youโll both maintain a strictly professional relationship.โ
A dissonance jarred herโhis previous prejudice toward Jack contrasted sharply with his current words. Lost in her astonishment, she didnโt notice Lucianโs white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel. He clearly didn't mean what he said.
