Chapter 1370

Lucian tapped the steering wheel. "I'll take the car to the service center," he said matter-of-factly. "It shouldn't take long."

Roxanne glanced around. They were in a remote area, devoid of rest stops or any sign of civilization. No buildings were visible, let alone a service center.

"Don't you have a spare tire?" she asked hopefully.

Lucian frowned. "I used it a while ago and forgot to replace it."

Feeling helpless, Roxanne surveyed their desolate surroundings. If their car broke down here, no one would find them. A wave of anxiety washed over her.

"I wouldn't risk it," she warned. "We're far from the service center, and I doubt the tire will hold. Why don't you call them and have them tow us? We can wait here." They could look after each other.

Lucian checked his watch. "Do you want to stay? Aren't you in a hurry? The elderly residents at the nursing home need you."

Hesitation flickered in Roxanne's eyes, but she quickly composed herself. "It's fine. Mr. Damaris and the other doctors will be there."

Lucian nodded, pulled out his phone, and called the service center. They waited patiently for the tow truck. Roxanne texted Jack, informing him she'd be late.

Because of their remote location, the tow truck arrived hours later. Lucian greeted the driver and escorted Roxanne to the truck for the trip to the nearest town. They bypassed the car workshop, which was a considerable distance further.

Lucian retrieved Roxanne's suitcase, asking her to wait while he spoke to the mechanic. He soon returned.

"What did you talk about?" Roxanne asked, confused.

"I told them to check the entire car. I noticed a problem with the speedometer a while ago."

Roxanne shuddered. "Thank goodness nothing happened to us." Then, a frown creased her brow. Something felt wrong. Lucian rarely drove this car; it's practically new. Why so many problems?

Her thoughts were evident on her face. Lucian extended a hand, interrupting her musings. Roxanne froze, staring at his outstretched hand. For a moment, she thought he wanted to hold her hand and felt a surge of panic. Then, he took her suitcase and easily pushed it along the gravel path.

Roxanne breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, I bought a large black suitcase. A pink one would have been awkward now...

Lucian led the way, pushing the suitcase, Roxanne trailing quietly behind. They fell into easy conversation. Suddenly, Roxanne's gaze fell on Lucian's hand hanging loosely at his side. Remembering her misinterpretation, she chuckled.
