Chapter 1375

โ€œIf you enjoy this place, we can travel here often in the future,โ€ Lucian said as they walked toward the lake. โ€œThe past few years have been incredibly hectic, so Iโ€™m looking forward to relaxing on vacation.โ€

He held Roxanneโ€™s hand. She gazed at his profile, a bitter feeling spreading through her heart. For six years, they had been out of touch, unaware of each other's lives. Roxanne had led a busy but fulfilling life; Lucian, however, did not seem to be faring as well.

โ€œWe could bring the children here someday,โ€ she said. โ€œI donโ€™t think theyโ€™ve ever been in the mountains.โ€

Lucian stopped and turned to her. They had reached the lake, nestled, it seemed, in the mountains, its water crystal clear, the willows gently swaying in the breeze.

Roxanne glanced at him and said thoughtfully, โ€œArchie and Benny would love to travel, too. Iโ€™ve been so busy, I havenโ€™t had the chance to take them anywhere. And Essieโ€ฆโ€ She paused, unsure about Estellaโ€™s situation, but guessing, โ€œEssie used to be afraid of strangers, so she hasnโ€™t been out much, has she? Now that sheโ€™s doing better, we can travel.โ€

Her words sounded natural, as if she had been contemplating this for a long time. Lucian tightened his grip on her hand, surprised. He had made his statement contingent on Roxanne's willingness to be with him. He never expected this ready agreement. Does she feel the same way?

Roxanneโ€™s heart skipped a beat as their eyes met. She didnโ€™t reply verbally, but offered a bright smile.

They stayed by the lake until sunset. Before Cayden arrived, Roxanne received a call from Jack.

โ€œHowโ€™s the situation? Is your car fixed?โ€

โ€œNo. Iโ€™m afraid I canโ€™t make it today. Iโ€™m so sorry. Is the medical consultation over? How are the elderly patients?โ€

Jack chuckled wryly. โ€œThe consultationโ€™s finished. Everyoneโ€™s exhausted. These patients have stubborn, long-standing illnesses; complete cures are unlikely. We can only help them recuperate slowly.โ€

Roxanne frowned apologetically. โ€œYou must have worked so hard. Iโ€™ll be there on time tomorrow.โ€

Jack reassured her. โ€œDonโ€™t worry. We have plenty of doctors. Be careful, and let me know if you need anything.โ€

Roxanne thanked him, and they briefly discussed the patients' condition before disconnecting.

Seeing Roxanneโ€™s downcast expression, Lucian pulled her into his arms. โ€œItโ€™s not your fault theyโ€™re sick. Donโ€™t blame yourself. If anyoneโ€™s to blame, itโ€™s me. I should have driven more carefully, so you could have been there on time.โ€

Roxanne sighed. โ€œThatโ€™s not true. I just feel terrible for them. Theyโ€™re alone and ill, with no one to help. Even with treatment, they need support and care to survive.โ€

Lucian was touched by her compassion. โ€œWeโ€™ll figure something out. The important thing is treating their illnesses.โ€

Roxanne nodded. โ€œI need to be at the nursing home early tomorrow. Since I missed today, Iโ€™ll have to work twice as hard.โ€
