Chapter 1376
It was almost six in the evening when Cayden finally arrived. After instructing Cayden to wait for the car repairs, Lucian drove Roxanne away in Cayden's car. By the time they reached Jadeborough, it was nine o'clock. Lucian took Roxanne to the hotel Jack had booked for the doctors. Unloading her luggage, he glanced at the night sky and apologized, "Sorry to have kept you so long."
Roxanne smiled. "It's not your fault. No one expected the accident. I should be thanking you for bringing me here, even this late." She knew they'd arrived so late because she wanted to be ready for her medical consultation the next day; they could have waited and left in the morning. Lucian had arranged the car switch to avoid disappointing her.
"It's getting late. I should go in. Text me when you're settled," Roxanne said before entering the hotel. Lucian remained outside, disturbed by the thought of her staying at the same hotel as Jack. He knew, however, that he shouldn't object; Roxanne was entirely focused on her patients' recovery.
The moment Roxanne disappeared into the elevator, Lucian received a call from Jonathan. He answered coolly.
"Are you guys okay?" Jonathan asked, his voice laced with panic.
"We're fine. What's wrong?" Lucian replied, returning to the car.
Jonathan's tone shifted to disbelief. "If you're fine, why didn't you reply to my messages? I've been texting you all day! I thought something happened!" After all, it had been Jonathan's idea to orchestrate the car breakdown. He couldn't forgive himself if an accident had resulted. He'd spent the day worrying and was hurt by Lucian's casual response.
Sensing Jonathan's concern, Lucian smiled. "I saw your messages but didn't have a chance to reply. It's a beautiful town."
Somewhat appeased, Jonathan asked, "So, did the two of youโฆ"
"We're in Jadeborough now," Lucian replied calmly.
Jonathan gasped. "Jadeborough? You were supposed to be in town! Are you together?"
"No. Jack booked a hotel for the doctors, and she's there," Lucian said.
Jonathan was incredulous. "You had such a good opportunity! I can't believe you didn't do anything!"
Lucian explained, "She has a consultation at the nursing home early tomorrow, and many of the elderly patients are seriously ill. I decided to bring her here." He felt guilty remembering the pained expression on Roxanne's face when she spoke of the elderly. Jonathan, also in the medical field, understood.
He said hesitantly, "But stillโฆ you should do something. You're in Jadeborough. Are you just going to watch over her like a knight in shining armor?"
