Chapter 139: Will You Really Cancel the Engagement?

Sonya's intentions were clear: she still hoped Lucian would marry Aubree. She had pestered him about it repeatedly over the past six years.

Lucian cocked a brow in annoyance. "I know what I'm doing. There's no need for you to interfere."

Sonya was upset. "You know what you're doing? Are you really planning on canceling the engagement?"

Before Lucian could reply, Sonya's expression changed, and her voice hardened. "No matter what, you personally agreed to the engagement with the Pearson family. You cannot disappoint her after all this time. I forbid you from breaking your promise; don't ever bring it up again!"

Sonya then glared at her son, and then at the mansion's main door, as if trying to see Roxanne through it. She eventually looked away and stormed off.

After watching his mother leave, Lucian composed himself and returned to the mansion. Estella had stopped crying in Roxanne's arms and seemed unharmed. Upon seeing him, she jumped from Roxanne's embrace and hugged his leg. Her eyes and nose were red.

After comforting her, Lucian turned to Roxanne. "I'm sorry my mother caused you trouble. I didn't expect her to come here."

Roxanne, having regained her composure, nodded calmly. "It's fine. I'm not surprised by her attitude. After all, I left the Farwell family on bad terms. Besides, she never approved of our marriage, and time has proven her right."

Roxanne had married Lucian despite Sonya's objections, and their marriage had been tumultuous. Returning to the country, she'd anticipated trouble from the Farwell family, but hadn't expected to be involved with Lucian again, let alone encounter Sonya under these circumstances.

Lucian frowned at her answer but remained silent; Roxanne was simply stating facts. His mother's prejudice hadn't lessened.

Silence fell over the living room.

"Ms. Jarvis, Mr. Farwell," Catalina said carefully, "it's time to take the children to school."

They were both startled back to reality.

As Roxanne held her sons' hands, she hesitated, then looked at Lucian. "As for Essieโ€ฆ do you want to take her, or should I continue caring for her?" Sonya's words had reminded Roxanne that Estella couldn't stay with her forever.

Before Lucian could answer, Estella released his leg and ran to Roxanne, grabbing her dress. Both Roxanne and Lucian were surprised.

Hearing for the second time that morning that she was leaving Roxanne, Estella's already red eyes welled up. She gave Lucian a pleading look, as if she would cry if he took her.

Lucian had no intention of doing so. "Please continue watching over her; her condition isn't stable yet. When it's inconvenient, you can have Catalina bring her home."

Seeing Estella's distress, Roxanne, her heart wavering, nodded in agreement. Estella's sad expression immediately changed to a delighted smile.
