Roxanne knew nothing of the kindergarten incident. After leaving, she went directly to the rural research institute established by her professor. Upon entering, she saw a charming man in a suit approaching.
โWelcome back, Roxanne. Iโm excited to be your colleague again,โ Colby Galloway said, extending his hand.
Roxanne nodded, briefly shaking his hand before withdrawing it. Colby, recently returned from abroad, had previously been Harveyโs assistant and a member of his research and development team. Roxanne and Harvey had both recognized his abilitiesโhe was a graduate of a prestigious university.
Though Roxanne remained impassive, Colby didn't mind. He smiled. โCome on, Iโll show you to your office.โ
He led the way, describing the institute's structure and key personnel. Reaching the office, he grinned. โI had it decorated to your previous preferences. Lindaโs office is just outside.โ
Roxanne nodded with satisfaction. โThatโs thoughtful. Thank you.โ
Colby, momentarily stunned, smiled warmly. โItโs nothing. You donโt need to be so formal.โ His gaze betrayed his affection, undiminished by her being a mother of two. He found her excellent in every way, her strengths outweighing any perceived flaws.
Roxanne, however, didn't notice his gaze. After a brief scan of the office, she said, โIโm here to understand the instituteโs operations. Could you give me a tour?โ
โOkay,โ Colby replied, still smiling.
Roxanne nodded and gestured for him to proceed. When he resumed his position in front of her, his smile faltered; his fondness was clearly unrequited. He found her view of him as merely a subordinate frustrating.
They left the office and headed to the main research area, arriving at the testing area, where researchers in lab coats and masks worked diligently. Roxanne, not wanting to disturb them, asked Colby to briefly explain the projects and their progress.
By afternoon, Roxanne had a clear understanding of the institute's situation, and discovered a significant problem. In the testing area, a foundation work area was completely idle. She learned that the necessary drugs had run out, and were awaiting distribution from the institute. This was true of several other areas.
The delayed drug distribution had halted numerous projects, increasing costs and timelines, resulting in substantial losses for the institute.
Exiting the testing area, Roxanne frowned and gave Colby a stern look. โThe delayed drug distribution has stalled many projects. Whatโs going on? Didn't you find a solution?โ
