Hearing her words, Colby stopped smiling and answered seriously, "I'm already looking for a solution to this problem."
Roxanne frowned, waiting for his next sentence.
"Recently, I met with a medicinal ingredients supplier and discussed a long-term collaboration. All that remains is signing the contract, scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. Previous delays were due to the research institute's construction phase. We faced numerous administrative issues, employees were adjusting to the new system, and Horington's medicinal ingredients are largely monopolized by a few major suppliers, resulting in insufficient supply to meet our demand. Furthermore, as a new entrant, our institute faced inflated prices from suppliers. Negotiating lower prices took considerable time, hence the delay."
Colby gave her a brief summary. While it sounded simple, as a researcher negotiating with shrewd suppliers, he had faced significant challenges. Even without details, Roxanne could imagine the difficulties. As head of the institute, he naturally managed everything and faced constant challengesโshe had encountered similar situations abroad.
After his explanation, Roxanne's expression relaxed. "Things must have been very difficult for you."
Colby's lips curved slightly. "Not really. It's my job."
"What's the name of this supplier?" Roxanne returned to business. "If possible, I'd like to join you for the contract signing. As I'll be overseeing future institute matters, I should meet them."
"Sure. You're welcome to come tomorrow," Colby replied.
Roxanne nodded. They returned to her office. Seeing him linger, she asked, "Is there anything else?"
Colby smiled politely. "I'd like to invite you to dinner tonight. It's your first day, and it's a chance to meet the institute staff."
Roxanne relaxed. "Thank you. Let me treat you. As the person in charge, I should show my sincerity, given our future collaboration."
Colby readily agreed. "Okay. See you after work."
He turned to leave, but Roxanne called out, "Could you bring the documents I need to review? I have no urgent matters and can use the time."
"Sure," he replied, quickly retrieving the documents. He politely excused himself after placing them on her desk and closed the door.
Alone, Roxanne called Madilyn. "Maddy, are you free to pick up Archie and Benny tonight? I have a commitment and might be late."
Madilyn simply replied, "Okay."
Roxanne reviewed the documents until Colby knocked, signaling the end of the workday.
"Time flies," Roxanne murmured, gathering her coat.
Colby grinned. "You're very focused; it's easy to lose track of time."
They chatted as they walked to Colby's car and drove to the restaurant. After about ten minutes, Colby pointed. "That's it."
Roxanne saw a charming, vintage building with exquisite carvings, situated on the riverfront. It was called The Waterfront.
As they approached, a Rolls-Royce pulled up. Cayden alighted and opened the passenger door for Lucian, whose dark eyes were fixed on The Waterfront entrance. He had glimpsed someone resembling Roxanne earlier in the car.
