Chapter 1401

โ€œWhen did you buy that?โ€ Roxanne asked, her tone slightly tense, her eyelashes trembling. We hadn't left each other's side at the mall, and I didn't see him buy a gift.

Lucian raised an eyebrow, answering with a resigned sigh. โ€œWhen I brought my bags here earlier. I didn't expect you to get lost when I was delayed a few minutes.โ€ A wry smile touched his lips as he recalled her earlier dazed expression.

Her blush deepened at his mention of it; she instinctively avoided his gaze, her eyes falling to the box on the seat.

โ€œGet in the car,โ€ Lucian coaxed. โ€œItโ€™s getting late. If we donโ€™t leave now, itโ€™ll be night by the time we get home.โ€

Roxanne nodded hesitantly and got into the car. He slid into the driver's seat and drove off. She placed the white box on her lap, unopened. He didn't urge her to open it.

After they left the parking lot, he asked, โ€œDo you want to visit the nursing home first, or head straight home?โ€ I know sheโ€™s worried about the residents, and weโ€™re going in that direction anyway.

Roxanne was surprised by his question. She pondered a moment before answering, โ€œThe nursing home first.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€ Lucian steered the car toward their destination.

Observing his familiarity with the route, she mused, I donโ€™t remember giving him the address, yet he seems to know where to goโ€ฆ No, I shouldnโ€™t overthink it.

After parking, Roxanne entered the nursing home. The doctors were still busy, but their expressions reassured her that the residents were in good condition. She still approached several doctors, confirming the residentsโ€™ well-being before finally relaxing.

Before leaving, she encountered some of the residents sheโ€™d examined yesterday. They were concerned upon seeing Jack wasn't with her. โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you visit with Dr. Damaris today, Dr. Jarvis? Did you two have a fight?โ€

Roxanne, in the midst of bidding farewell to other residents, froze at their words. Turning, she explained resignedly to the old woman, โ€œYouโ€™ve misunderstood our relationship, granny. Dr. Damaris and I are just colleaguesโ€ฆโ€

As she finished, she felt someone approach from behind. She didn't mind; their close proximity wasn't unusual. Moments later, she saw understanding dawn in the residents' eyes.

โ€œAh, it seems we misunderstood your relationship with Dr. Damaris, Dr. Jarvis. This is your boyfriend, right?โ€ The old woman quickly corrected herself, briefly inspecting Lucian. โ€œHmm, heโ€™s tall and handsome. I think heโ€™s a good fit for you, Dr. Jarvis.โ€

Roxanne opened her mouth to clarify, but considering her interactions with Lucian, she couldn't bring herself to deny the statement. A smile played on Lucianโ€™s lips; he remained gentlemanly, offering no denial. The old woman gazed at Roxanne with warmth. โ€œIs he a doctor too?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s not,โ€ Roxanne replied stiffly.

The old woman shook her head, remarking sincerely, โ€œThen heโ€™s a little lacking compared to Dr. Damaris. I donโ€™t think you two have much to talk about, not being in the same professionโ€ฆโ€
