Chapter 142: Not What I Meant

Roxanne's thanks remained unspoken. Jonathan, too, was stunned. Frowning at Frieda, he reprimanded her, "Frieda, what are you babbling about?"

Frieda shrugged nonchalantly. "I'm being serious. Even though someone broke up with Lucian silently, she's still clinging to him. Doesn't she know Aubree is with Lucian? What's the difference between her and a third party?" She gave Roxanne a contemptuous look. "I can't stand her, and she'll never earn my respect, even if she cures Grandpa."

Although unnamed, Roxanne was clearly the target. A gloomy expression settling on her face, Roxanne said coldly, "Ms. Queen, instead of making snide comments, perhaps you should learn some manners before patronizing others."

Frieda's expression changed drastically. "How dare you accuse me of being ill-mannered!"

Roxanne met her gaze impassively. "What has my relationship with Lucian to do with you? This is my personal matter, and you have no right to interfere. As a lady from a prominent family, shouldn't you know better than to meddle in others' business?"

Roxanne's admonishment silenced Frieda, who worried about appearing uncultured. Recovering her composure, Roxanne warned, "To me, you're nothing but a stranger, at most a family member of my patient. Therefore, do not question me about my personal affairs!"

Roxanne then bid Jonathan goodbye and left before Frieda could react. Watching Roxanne leave, Frieda gritted her teeth. She knew Aubree had been by Lucian's side for years; if not for Frieda, Lucian would have married Aubree. Now Roxanne had reappeared, drawing Lucian's attention. How dare she, Frieda fumed, Aubree has treated Grandpa well and is in no way inferior! How dare this homewrecker accuse me of being ill-mannered!

Seeing Frieda's rage, Jonathan glared at her before chasing after Roxanne.

"Dr. Jarvis!"

Roxanne stopped and turned. Jonathan ran towards her.

Baffled, she asked, "What is it?"

Jonathan was visibly apologetic. "I'm sorry for my sister's behavior. I don't know what's gotten into her; she's easily agitated lately and makes snarky remarks. Please don't take it to heart."

Roxanne smiled calmly. "Don't worry. I won't. And I won't stop treating Old Mr. Queen because of her."

"That's not what I meant," Jonathan said helplessly. He admired Roxanne and thought they could be friends, but she always steered the conversation back to Alfred's treatment.

Roxanne, in no mood for idle chatter, politely asked, "Is there anything else?"

Jonathan, sensing he was keeping her, replied, "That's all. Goodbye."

Roxanne nodded and got into her car.
