Chapter 14: Getting Involved Again

The next morning, Roxanne sent the children to school alone, as Lucian didn't arrive. When Pippa saw Roxanne alone, she was surprised. "Ms. Jarvis, where's Mr. Farwell today?"

Roxanne was briefly stunned. She hadn't expected Pippa to notice that Lucian had been bringing the children to school with her the last two days, let alone inquire about his absence. Because it implied closeness between her and Lucian, Roxanne was at a loss for an answer.

However, Estella produced her notebook and wrote, "I'm living with Ms. Jarvis now!" She then held it up with a bright smile.

Pippa, seeing Estella's cheerful demeanor in contrast to her listlessness two days earlier, beamed and stroked Estella's hair. "I see." She then looked back at Roxanne, impressed by Estella's affection for Roxanne and her sons.

Roxanne breathed a sigh of relief, grateful for Estella's intervention. After handing over the children, she said, "Thanks for taking care of them," and drove away.

Her busy scheduleโ€”caring for Estella and managing the research instituteโ€”prevented her from visiting Alfred for his next treatment. Remembering this, she turned her car around and, after confirming with Jonathan that it was a convenient time, headed to the Queen residence.

Jonathan was already waiting. He greeted Roxanne warmly upon her arrival. "Dr. Jarvis, I was about to call you; you hadn't been in touch."

Roxanne apologized. "Something came up the last two days. How is Old Mr. Queen doing?"

Jonathan, who had been making polite conversation and didn't intend to criticize her, replied with admiration in his eyes. "Thanks to your amazing medical skills, Grandpa's condition has improved significantly. Otherwise, I'd already be bothering you."

Relieved, Roxanne went upstairs with her medical kit. Jonathan followed, furrowing his brow as he glimpsed her hand. "Did you hurt yourself?"

Roxanne dismissed it. "I accidentally scalded myself while spilling soup. It's nothing." After a pause, she added, "Don't worry; it won't affect Old Mr. Queen's treatment."

Alfred knew she was coming, and was already sitting up in bed when they entered his room. Roxanne sat beside him, greeted him cordially, and began the treatment. Despite the nasty-looking burn, her own medication had rendered it painless, and it didn't hinder her needle work.

Once the treatment was finished, Roxanne began packing up. Jonathan offered to help. Briefly surprised, Roxanne didn't refuse, sensing his concern for her wound.

Downstairs, as she was about to leave, Jonathan called out, "Dr. Jarvis, please wait."

She stopped, looking puzzled, as he retrieved something from a drawer. "This is our family's best burn ointment. As a doctor, you must take care of your handsโ€”they're invaluable."

Just as she was about to thank him, Frieda's cynical voice interrupted.

"Jonathan, don't be so kind. You might make someone fall for you."
