Chapter 1441
It wasn't until Lucian heard Madilyn's words that he understood her point and stopped dead in his tracks. "This whole incident might blow over if you don't show up, but it will definitely worsen if you appear. If that happens, they might even swarm Farwell Group and Roxanne's house!" Madilyn reminded him, acutely aware of the journalists' mentality.
Lucian clenched his fists, veins bulging. "What should I do, then?" he asked, struggling to contain his anger. "I wouldn't have acted so impulsively if I'd known this would happen!"
Madilyn rolled her eyes. Why was he seeking their solutions when he was the source of the problem?
"Mr. Farwell, perhaps we should send someone to get Mrs. Farwell out?" Cayden suggested cautiously.
"How are you going to do that? There are so many journalists!" Madilyn retorted.
Cayden fell silent, offering an awkward look.
"If you don't send enough men, you won't get through the crowd. If you send too many, people will say Farwell Group is heavy-handed," Madilyn continued, intimately familiar with the press's tactics.
"Any bright ideas, then?" Cayden asked, his own ideas exhausted.
"Hmm... Let me think..." Madilyn replied, stroking her chin. The two of them pondered a solution.
Lucian, frowning, pulled out his phone and tried calling Roxanne. Her line remained busy, call after call.
"Don't bother," Madilyn said. "I tried earlier; her line's been busy the whole time. Those journalists are probably bombarding her with calls."
Indeed, Roxanne's phone was switched off when Lucian tried again. She must have turned it off to escape the relentless calls. I can't believe I caused her so much trouble...
Just as regret washed over Lucian, he saw his chat with Benny and a new possibility occurred to him. His frown eased as he dialed Benny's number. The journalists might have Roxanne's number, but not the children's!
The call connected after a few seconds. Benny's excited greeting filled the air. "Hi, Mr. Farwell! There are lots of people outside, and we can't get out! Could you pick us up?" He was leaning against the window, watching the journalists.
Madilyn and Cayden froze in shock.
"Don't worry; I'll figure something out," Lucian reassured him, his eyes apologetic. After a pause, he added, "Could you pass the phone to your mommy? I need to speak to her."
"Okay!" Benny replied, his voice adorable, before handing the phone to Roxanne.
Roxanne's expression was conflicted. The children might not know, but I know the journalists are here because of Lucian, and he knows it too. He must be calling to apologize or something. For some reason, hearing Benny address him on the phone eased my anxiety. It's as though I've found a lifeboat.
