Chapter 1440
Lucian stared gloomily at his computer screen, a video of journalists swarming Roxanne's house and research institute playing. He hadn't anticipated his actions causing her so much trouble. His thoughts were interrupted by the abrupt opening of his office door. He looked up in displeasure, about to speak, when Madilyn yelled, "Get over here, Lucian! You owe me an explanation for that online announcement!"
She stormed up, slamming her hands on his desk and glaring. Lucian frowned, momentarily confused. Remembering Madilyn was Roxanne's best friend, he suppressed his anger, motioning politely for her to sit. "Please have a seat."
Madilyn was in no mood for politeness. "No, you explain this first! Since when have my godsons become your sons?" She actually meant to ask about their true identities and how he'd won Roxanne's heart. But Lucian's response stunned her.
"They may not be my biological children, but they'll call me Father soon enough. I'll treat them as my own; you needn't worry," he said patiently, massaging his forehead.
Madilyn froze. Huh? Does he still not know Archie and Benny are his children? Then what about the Farwell Group announcement...? She recalled the online search results for Roxanne's nameโquestions about her relationship with Jack and the boys' true parentage. Had Lucian made the announcement to protect them?
This eased her anxiety somewhat, but she wasn't letting him off easily. "What about the journalists outside Roxanne's house? What's your plan?" After all, he was the reason they were there.
Instead of answering, Lucian glanced at Cayden, who looked conflicted. "I warned the press, but theyโฆ"
The media wouldn't ignore Farwell Group's shocking announcement. The scramble for a scoop was only natural, and the crowd of journalists continued to grow. Cayden was helpless to stop it. Madilyn and Lucian understood his unspoken words.
"What will Roxanne and the kids do? They can't stay home forever!" Madilyn exclaimed anxiously.
"I'll pick them up," Lucian replied grimly, rising and grabbing his coat.
Madilyn and Cayden quickly stepped in front of him. "Those journalists just want answers, from me or Roxanne. They'll leave once they get them," Lucian insisted, his expression unwavering.
Cayden couldn't let Lucian go, but unsure how to dissuade him, he let Madilyn speak. "Do you really think an answer is all they want? Roxanne's the focus; they'll pester her even if you show up!"
