Chapter 1453
Roxanne was moved by his words but remained hesitant. โPerhaps, but I lack sufficient knowledge of cancer to contribute meaningfully to anti-cancer research.โ
For the past few years, she had focused on treating patients through acupuncture. She simply didn't possess the necessary expertise in medicinal herbs to confidently develop an anti-cancer medication.
Sensing her apprehension, Jack explained, โI won't lie. Only a few medical texts within the Damaris family archives address this research. However, the research was halted due to technical limitations at the time. These books, however, inspired me.โ
Roxanne's eyes gleamed. If I could examine those books, perhaps I'd find inspiration too. But they were Damaris family property. She doubted he'd lend them to an outsider.
โThe traditional medicine texts I lent you previously were part of that collection. If you're interested, I can lend you the entire set.โ
She nodded without hesitation. A moment later, she inquired, โIs it truly permissible? Don't those books contain confidential Damaris family information?โ
Prestigious medical families often guarded certain techniques. This explained Roxanne's elation at learning Root Thirteen from Jack, and her skepticism about his offer.
He grinned. โI can't hide anything from you, can I? There is, however, a condition for accessing those books.โ
โWhat condition?โ she frowned, a premonition of unease settling over her.
โAs you mentioned, these books contain secrets the Damaris family wishes to protect. To access them, you must sever your apprenticeship with Dr. Lambert and join the Damaris family.โ He added, seemingly apprehensive of her refusal, โThe content isn't accessible to ordinary apprentices. Old Mr. Damaris must acknowledge one's capabilities first. Only three members of this generation have earned that right. You would be the fourth.โ
Most would have readily accepted such a tempting offer. Roxanne had learned much from her mentor. Even severing ties with him wouldn't have significantly harmed her prospects.
Yet she refused. โIn that case, I must decline.โ
Jack's eyes darkened. โWhy? Don't you want to read those books? Aren't you curious about the Damaris family's medical expertise? If I recall correctly, you joined the consultation hoping to glimpse their collection.โ
Roxanne nodded. โOf course I am. However, a few books are not enough to make me betray Professor Lambert, who has helped me countless times. He is more than a teacher to me.โ
A flicker of cold calculation crossed his eyes. Had she accepted, I could have considered that a satisfactory outcome. I did not anticipate her rejection!
โSince you've put it that way, I would appear despicable if I tried to persuade you further.โ Suppressing his anger, Jack pursed his lips indifferently. โI hope you won't regret your decision, Ms. Jarvis.โ
