Chapter 1457
Elias frowned, his voice tinged with exasperation. โIโve long told you to let Lucian decide his own marriage. Everyone is free to live their own life. Why must we interfere so much?โ
Disapproval etched Sonyaโs face. โHow can I allow that? Is Lucianโs marriage his business alone? Never mind marrying another woman, why that woman?โ Why Roxanne? And with two children!
Seeing her dissatisfaction, Elias patiently cajoled, โWhoever he chooses is his business. Heโs an adult. We canโt interfere in everything.โ
Sonya remained obstinate. โIf heโd married Aubree earlier, this wouldnโt have happened.โ She gave Elias a chagrined look. โYouโre no better. You allowed him free rein, delaying the marriage.โ
โReality proves Aubree unsuited to be mistress of the Farwell family.โ
Elias felt Lucian had done nothing wrong.
Sonya retorted, โAubree only erred from anxiety to marry Lucian. Had he settled down with her earlier, she wouldnโt have done those foolish things.โ
Elias stared at her in vexation.
Feeling guilty under his scrutiny, Sonya muttered, โIโm not saying she was right. I merely feel sheโs sincere.โ The Pearson familyโs plight then crossed her mind. Melancholic, she sighed. โThe Pearsons have been friends for years, now reduced to misery by the Farwells. It makes us seem ruthless.โ
Elias knew the Pearsonsโ situation, but saw no fault in his sonโs actions. Aubree had attacked the Farwells; she deserved a lesson. The Queen familyโs opportunistic actions were simply business competition.
โElias, talk to Lucian about sparing the Pearsons. Theyโve suffered enough. He wonโt listen to me; only you can persuade him,โ Sonya pleaded, grasping his arm.
Elias placed his hand over hers. โFrankly, their situation stems from business competition. We canโt help. If it were known we helped them after they defied us, the Farwells would be easy prey.โ
His gentle voice brooked no argument. Sonya, considering the Farwellsโ reputation, abandoned her plan. Still, she disliked Roxanne marrying into the family.
Sighing softly, she remarked almost casually, โSpeaking of the Pearsons, I wonder how Essie is doing.โ
Elias also missed Estella. โVisit her if youโre worried. I havenโt seen her in a while. Weโll go together another day.โ
Sonya lamented, โI wish! Lucian sent her to Roxanneโs. Roxanne wonโt let her near me; itโs as if Iโve hurt her.โ
