Chapter 1469

Ophelia exited the kindergarten with a grim expression. Thank goodness I handled that quickly! Who would have thought Mr. Bauer would launch an investigation upon his return? Gosh, I almost blew my cover! This must mean the child's injury was quite seriousโ€ฆ

A smirk curled her lips. That bitch Roxanne has ruined my life! She deserves this.

Ophelia needed to inform Aubree, so she quickly drove and called. The call connected after a few rings.

"How did it go? Did you succeed?" Aubree asked urgently.

"I 'greased' Benny's wheels, and he took a nasty fall!" Ophelia said with a smug chortle. "Mr. Bauer even made a fuss; I'm sure the little brat is badly hurt!"

Aubree was gleeful and relieved. "Well done! I'm so thankful. I wouldn't have known who else to turn to."

"Don't mention it. Remember how you helped me? I'm happy to return the favor."

Aubree wasn't finished. "So what if I'm not as rich? Compared to me, Ophelia is still lower class. She helped me, and I should reward her."

After searching her room, Aubree said, "You took a huge risk. How can I not thank you? I have a handbag that would suit you."

Ophelia, accustomed to Aubree's condescending tone, feigned refusal. "I told you there's no need! You've already helped me so much."

But she desperately wanted the handbag. She'd been with Aubree for years; she knew how generous Aubree was. Even a small sum from Aubree would be a fortune to Ophelia. Aubree might be down, but she's still far wealthier than me. That handbag is beyond my means! Of course I want it!

Aubree pressed the issue. "Are you looking down on me because the Pearsons aren't what they used to be?" she grumbled, her face darkening. "I can still afford a handbag!"

Stunned, Ophelia stammered, "No, that's notโ€”"

"Then meet me at Orange Moon tonight. I'll bring the handbag!" Aubree interrupted, ending the call.

Orange Moon was a bar Aubree now frequentedโ€”a far cry from her usual haunts, but impressive enough for Ophelia.

Aubree applied her makeup and chose her outfit. Finally, she grabbed the handbag and left. She looked impeccably put-together; no one would guess the Pearson family's downfall.
