Chapter 1472
Roxanne sensed a peculiar tone in Jack's voice. She also knew the children disliked him, so she immediately refused his offer. "That's not necessary," she said. "Benny's injury is almost healed. Thank you for your concern, Mr. Damaris."
Jack replied, "It's best to be cautious with a child. I have a special family ointment, passed down through the Damaris family. I'll bring it over later to visit him."
Sensing his persistence, Roxanne couldn't refuse again and reluctantly agreed.
After hanging up, Roxanne told the children about Jack's upcoming visit.
"Mommy, can you ask him not to come?" Benny pleaded, reluctant to see Jack.
Roxanne felt helpless. "I tried to dissuade him, but he's determined. He means well, so don't be openly hostile."
She then turned to Estella. "And you, Essie, don't repeat your earlier behavior. I'll ask him to leave as soon as possible."
Estella nodded reluctantly. Even after Roxanne's punishmentโmaking Estella stand in a cornerโthe little girl felt no remorse. Roxanne sighed. She didn't know what to do with her children.
Soon, Jack arrived at the mansion. Roxanne greeted him, and the three children offered a polite, though unenthusiastic, greeting.
Apparently oblivious to their coolness, Jack approached Benny. "I heard you were injured. Let me take a look."
He reached for Benny's wrist. Benny, averse to Jack, feigned agony at the touch and pulled his arm away, despite the near-healing wound.
"Does it hurt badly?" Jack asked, scrutinizing the child.
Benny nodded vehemently. "Even the slightest touch hurts!" He added silently, Daddy is better. He didn't touch my wrist when he visited.
Jack observed Benny for a moment before handing Roxanne a small tube of ointment. "This is a special Damaris family remedy. Apply it to Benny's arm, and the injury will heal quickly."
Roxanne gratefully accepted the ointment. Jack nodded, then casually glanced at the children, who stood warily around Roxanne.
They're giving me that look again! A surge of displeasure washed over Jack.
He wasn't certain if Archie and Benny were Lucian's children, but their clear loyalty to Lucian was enough to fuel his dislike.
"I need to take the children out shortly, so if there's nothing else, Mr. Damaris..." Roxanne subtly urged him to leave.
He readily obliged. "Take care of Benny. The research institute tasks aren't urgent."
Roxanne smiled. "Thank you. I'll ensure the new medicine is developed on time."
Jack left without further conversation. Watching his car depart, Roxanne felt suspicious. His visit clearly aimed to confirm Benny's injury. She couldn't shake the feeling that Jack had changed since their first meeting.
