Chapter 1489

After dinner, the children tactfully retired upstairs, giving their parents some privacy. Roxanne cleared the dining table, but before she could begin washing dishes, Lucian gently took her hand and guided her away.

"Since you're tired, go rest outside," he said.

He rolled up his sleeves and began washing the dishes himself. Roxanne was surprised, though not entirely unfamiliar with this side of Lucian. She mused, If he had treated me this way six years ago, would we be a happy family now?

Noticing Roxanne lingered, Lucian initiated small talk. "Where's Lysa? Why isn't she here?"

"She hasn't been feeling well, so I told her to rest," Roxanne replied, snapping back to the present.

"Then I'll look for a housekeeper to help you," Lucian offered.

Roxanne shook her head. "There's no need. I can't trust anyone else right now. Once I'm finished with my current project, I'll have time to care for the children."

A yawn escaped Roxanne's lips mid-sentence. Lucian glanced at her, then accelerated his dishwashing. Once finished, he led her from the kitchen.

Feeling groggy, Roxanne followed him to the couch. Lucian began massaging her temples. "Must you keep working with the Damaris family? You're overworked. Perhaps you should cancel the collaboration. If you wish to make a living in Chanaea, I can help you."

The massage eased some of Roxanne's fatigue, but Lucian's suggestion caused her to frown. "We've already signed the contract. How can I just cancel it?" she said, her expression serious.

"I'll pay the termination fee," Lucian replied, his voice deep.

"It's not that simple," Roxanne explained. "Developing this drug is important. There's a critical shortage of anti-cancer medication here. If I can develop a new drug, I can save many lives." She smiled faintly and shook her head. "Initially, I was focused on the Damaris family's ancient medical texts. Now, treating disease and helping people feels far more vital."

Her eyes solemn, she continued, "I've been a doctor for years, and I've seen too many patients suffer and die from cancerโ€”a truly agonizing experience. They endure daily suffering, helpless to stop it, their final days a living hell. I want to end that suffering; I've seen enough."

Lucian's expression softened. "I understand how you feel."

"I'm exhausted, but I think it will all be worth it," Roxanne sighed.

Continuing his massage, Lucian said, "I know you want to help people, but you need to take care of yourself. If you continue like this, you'll get sick. Wouldn't that render your research useless?"

Roxanne nodded, a knowing smile playing on her lips. "I'm a doctor; I know my own body. Don't worry."

Lucian remained silent, his gaze fixed on her. I understand her feelings, but how can I not worry about her?
