Chapter 1498

Lucian's embrace was tight, born of a terror she might leave. "Don't go," he murmured. He yearned to hold her, to feel her in his arms, but feared frightening the children, forcing himself to restrain his longing. Now that Roxanne had returned, he wouldn't let her go easily.

Roxanne, unsure if it was a hallucination, sensed his anxiety. After a moment's hesitation, she returned his hug, whispering, "I'm not going to leave. I wanted to say I'll be waiting downstairs if you're not free." She was here for the children; she wouldn't leave until she had answers.

Lucian slowly relaxed his grip. Roxanne, soothingly patting his back, pulled away. "What happened? Why are youโ€ฆ"

He gazed at her, slowly calming. But the memory of the interrogation chilled him. "Ophelia sabotaged your brakes," his voice icy. "She also injured Benny last time."

Roxanne's eyes widened. "Why would she do that?" She couldn't understand why Ophelia would want her and her children dead.

"Aubree's behind it," Lucian's tone grew even colder. "I nearly lost you again."

Roxanne's brows furrowed at the mention of Aubree. Then, hearing Lucian's sigh, she shuddered.

"You noticed her plan in time, and I'm safe," Roxanne said, unsure how to respond to his turmoil. She offered comfort. "This was my oversight. I'll protect the children and myself better. And you've assigned more bodyguards, haven't you? We'll be fine."

Seeing her helplessness, Lucian suppressed his feelings and nodded. "I hope so."

"About Aubree," Roxanne began, noticing his averted gaze, "I want to make a police report. I wanted to let the police handle this, butโ€ฆ I thought she'd change."

Honestly, she'd hoped for mercy. But the evening's events hardened her resolve. "Since she refuses to change, I won't waste any more time. I don't know what insane plan she'll concoct next if she escapes punishment."

Lucian's gaze was grim, though he controlled the viciousness in his eyes. He felt letting the police handle it was too lenient. Nevertheless, he nodded. "It's your decision."

"Where's Ophelia?" For a police report, she needed evidence, and Ophelia would be a key witness.

Lucian contacted Cayden. Confirming Ophelia was still in custody, he relayed the information to Roxanne. Without hesitation, she called the police. She wouldn't risk the children's safety by delaying.
