Chapter 1506
Roxanne glanced at the time after Sonya and Elias left. "It's getting late. I should be heading back now. I can't rest easy knowing the children are home alone."
"I'll drive you home," Lucian said, frowning.
It was indeed late, and Aubree's whereabouts remained unknown. The possibility that she might reappear and attempt to harm Roxanne worried him. He couldn't let Roxanne go home alone.
Roxanne understood his concern and accepted his offer. "Thanks."
In the car, they discussed Aubree as Lucian drove slowly toward Roxanne's house.
"I wonder where Aubree is right now. I can't rest until she's behind barsโฆ" Roxanne murmured, a worried look in her eyes as she gazed out the window.
Lucian slowed the car further, reassuring her. "We have strong evidence against her; the police won't let her escape. Meanwhile, I'll do everything I can to find her. Until she's caught, my men will protect you and the children discreetly."
Recalling Lucian's timely intervention in the recent crisis, Roxanne felt somewhat reassured. "Thanks." However, she couldn't shake a feeling of inadequacy regarding her children's safety.
Lucian's eyes dimmed at her self-blame. "I should be apologizing. Aubree wouldn't have targeted you and the children if it weren't for me. My negligence failed to protect you all."
Roxanne frowned, about to speak, when Lucian continued, "From now on, I'll increase security around you and the children. I'll also explore additional ways to ensure your safety."
"I just hope we catch Aubree soon. Hopefully, she'll repent and change for the better behind bars," Roxanne said.
Lucian nodded, and they continued their conversation.
By the time they reached Roxanne's house, it was eleven o'clock. After a long day at the research institute and an emotionally draining evening, Roxanne was exhausted. Lucian's slow driving only added to her drowsiness; she was barely awake when she got out of the car.
"It's very late. Drive carefully," she reminded him, struggling to keep her eyes open.
Touched by her concern despite her fatigue, Lucian gently caressed her face.
"What's wrong?" Roxanne asked, confused.
"I think I might be traumatized by this evening's events. I don't want to let you out of my sight," Lucian replied.
Roxanne chuckled. "Come on, stop joking!" She couldn't believe Lucian would be traumatized by anything.
Before she knew it, Lucian had pulled her into an embrace. Unlike their earlier hug, he was cautious this time.
"How much longer are you going to make me wait?"
Roxanne paused, hearing his question, nervously pulling back from the hug. Lucian tightened his embrace at her reaction. "Are you regretting it?"
